Character Sketch
Ahdri is a Sun Villager who spent much of her life serving as Savah’s handmaiden. After Rayek brought the Palace of the High Ones to the village, many of the Sun Folk felt a spark of magic within. Ahdri was among them, and her rock-shaping ability first manifested while working alone near the Little Palace, which though only a tiny replica, still fed the elves’ magic just as the full sized Palace did. She used her power to shape defensive spikes all around the mountains surrounding Sorrow’s End, first to repel hostile Go-Backs and later, to hide the village from human explorers.

Ultimately the humans did discover the village, and overran it. Ahdri made it possible for her people to escape by tunneling underground into the rock. During the human invasion, she sacrificed herself to protect the Sun Folk by fleeing with the Little Palace to the Bridge of Destiny, drawing the humans and their troll companion after her in their lust for the treasure. She took an arrow through the chest before dissolving the Bridge of Destiny and killing her pursuers while the rest of her people fled underground.

Ahdri upsetFortunately, Ahdri was cocooned by a preserver before death claimed her. Though sleeping in suspended animation in wrapstuff, her spirit remained active, tapping into the residual magic of Yurek and other long-dead rock-shapers that was infused into the very rock, protecting the ruins of the village from further intrusion.

Her cocoon was discovered by a band of treasure-seeking trolls and Ahdri was forced to reveal her power to them before they cut open her cocoon and released her mortally wounded body from the protection of the time-suspending preserver webbing. The trolls took Ahdri, still wrapped and unable to flee or fight, and forced her to unearth gems and precious metals from the rock. They eventually ended up in the ancient troll caverns under the Wolfrider’s Holt and were corrupted by the pocket of bad magic that resided there, devolving them into hulking, dull-witted misfits.

Treestump and Clearbrook rescued Ahdri and she was healed by Leetah in the Palace. She has been reunited with her long-lost wandering lovemate Windkin. Ahdri now uses her rock-shaping ability to block the misfit trolls from reaching the elves’ underground forge where Treestump makes metal weapons and tools. A piece of her living magic remains a part of the rocks of her longtime home in the desert Sun Village.

Elfquest – The Long Run Podcast #5

elfquest

The Long Run takes place outside of the “View From the Gutters” normal continuity of episodes, and features table discussion of an entire work or long selection of a series. In the fifth episode of this bonus series, they talk about Elfquest, by Wendy and Richard Pini. For this episode they read the first three story arcs: The Original Quest, Siege at Blue Mountain, and Kings of the Broken Wheel. (The audio player is at the end of the introduction.)

“Greatest Cosplayer of All Time”

WP Sonja

It certainly has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? And whether or not you agree, there’s no denying that Wendy Pini is one multi-faceted lady. A cosplay pioneer before the word was coined, co-creator and artistic force behind “the first American manga” Elfquest, imaginatrix to the re-envisioning of “Masque of the Red Death” into a futuristic musical thriller-to-be. Good reviews are always appreciated. Good and respectful reviews, now those are rare treats! Read one here.
