I tried to shut down my ElfQuest muse because I have no time to write fanfics... I stopped reading fanfics since that's the only way I know to shut down a muse... (and vice versa, reading scifi has caused me to start writing the kind of fantasy that means I need to study astronomy... making up convincing solar systems is at least as difficult as making up convincing continents... if my newest story qualifies as scifi it's softcore, definitely... btw, currently all I know about the Giant Falcons are that they aren't falcons, technically... have yet to finish the ornithology book to find out what they are, then... )

It helped. Sort of. For the fanfics at least. Laughing

Instead, I have this irresistible urge to draw! Embarassed

I've taken up from where I left last time I felt artistic... first, two finished pieces (finished as in I don't know what else to do to make them look better!)

Here's my newest Holt character - an exiled chief. Pregnant. Alone and hawkless. Currently calls herself Dead-Heart-Beating because her old name has been stolen from her.

And Firewing, also in Starpool Holt - a chatty little preserver. I recycled half of a preserver I drew for the Fan Art calendar... I also made Bumbleberry from the other one but I forget where I archived that file... I'm good at losing even things that have no physical existence! Rolling Eyes

here's a scetch, untouched by computer. It was difficult to draw because there aren't any comic panels showing Maleen in full profile... at least, not in enough detail...

Another scetch: Hawkheart, now named Heartbeat, reunited with her old furmate Arrowspeed. I stole the pose from a calendar pic showing Skywise and Aroree. Both these ladies are Hawkblood gliders, "Hawkriders" from Mountain Eyrie. This reunion has not happened in the Starpool Holt roleplay yet...

And here are some unfinished computer coloured ones... first, Arrowspeed. She's not named for her archery skills, actually, but for being the swiftest glider in the tribe. Also, her cub name was Arrow because her father was an archer...

Second, Hawkheart back when she still owned her name and her sword... she lost a challenge to Arrowspeed's half-sister Valaree (a pretty blonde boneshaper gone slightly Winnie...)

If people like these, I might repost some of my earlier work too. I've posted those mostly in the who can draw the best elf topic I think... and at EQfanart and once to illustrate a story (the story is still unfinished - I suppose everyone is used to me not finishing stuff... Embarassed

Cool stuff Leanan! (*ppst! I haven't forgotten our project either!*)

As for advice:....watch your ear placement for your Elves in profile. The bottom of the earlobe should be any lower that the nose, on a couple you've got it almost down to the chin!

I really like the drawing of the preserver, though! Very cute! Razz

Excellent work! One crit I would say, watch the angle of the face - their chins seem to jut out a little far or sharply. Otherwise they're so nice! Good work - I can never get the 'elf head' proportions right, myself, I usually wind up with smaller eyes and more human sized.

Here's Hawkheart better sized, took some time because I opened an account at a new image hosting site (called photojerk, of all things! Rolling Eyes

I wanted a name I won't forget... I try to obey all terms of service I can and photobucket's forbid multiple accounts for one person... they warned me my account was getting full... )

Ears and chins have always been most difficult for me. Thanks for the advice, it's much appreciated.

It's way cool, yes - but it's too long to be an elf name - what would people call her? Deady? Heartie? Rolling Eyes

besides, she identifies with it all too well... y'see, the only reason Valaree allowed her to live (tribal law, the High Wind, designates that a chief who is chief no more is a dead chief) is that she is pregnant from an unwanted recognition...

I will not only color it but finish it otherwise too... that one's my newest, I'm glad you like it! That means I'm learning!

As for Dead-Heart-Beating, Valaree gave her the name, but when she was exiled she did not expect to have anyone using it... her son when born would have known her mainly as Mother... she did not know there were other tribes of elves in the world... and there weren't - she stepped into a magic pool and entered another world, Starpool Island... now she's met one elf, a girl called Kari, also an ex-chief but one whose whole tribe is dead... right now Kari and Heartbeat are being forced to stay in a cave by a convenient snowstorm... they still haven't found there are other elves on the island... Twisted Evil

That might be where I learned this bad habit... what works for animation and for certain angles does not work for everything... I am a wendy imitator in good AND bad - remember I told you I'm no artist, although people stopped believing that after I got into the fan art calendar... I still think I made it mostly because the idea was good... I mean, I copied every single pose from the comics! Since then I've at least learned to mix poses with different characters and combine them so it's not obvious always which panels from where I've ripped off... now that I look at the calendar entry (December) it's painfully obvious everyone recognizes the panels in KotBW (mainly) that I borrowed the characters from... as if they were traced... definitely not good enough to look scanned! Laughing

For your information - first one of Heartbeat is based on Dewshine. If I changed the colours and removed the scar on the brow, I could pass it off as Dewshine fanart... the unfinished one I mentioned - sources were lovemates calendar, as well as the other two Hearbeat pics - one with sword I drew all by myself, that's why bad quality and no shadows! Razz

Arrowspeed on the second one is based on Strongbow for the arms... rayek for the body pose... (like Rayek, Arrowspeed is not a born glider but one who learned the hard way... but she was raised among a tribe consisting almost entirely of born gliders who all thought it could not be learned ...except her parents who believed in her... her mother is a Savah-type figure, Selaree the Eldest... her father is a Strongbow-type hunter, too much bird blood, died from not noticing arrows in his body until too late... they were as divorced as elves can be... *rolls eyes - Mary Sue, totally!*) Her face is cut-and-pasted from another pic I drew earlier... hmm now I see I made her bowstring invisible by too much resizing! Interesting effect... *wonders if it's good or bad*

Arrowspeed wears FOUR earrings on her right ear, none on her left.

As for their earlier names - Hawkheart is over two hundred years old and was Flitter as a cub and Snowflake until her brother died and she became chief's heir, when her mother gave her a serious name in a last desperate attempt to make the impulsive spoiled younger child serious... it didn't work too well, and that's why she's ex chief now - don't accept challenges to a duel to the death, anything-goes-martial arts rules, with the strongest magic user around if you're trying to keep a pregancy sercet, and your Recognized, whom you stil hate but have commanded to be silent, is among the audience! Rolling Eyes

What else could poor Kestrel do when that darned Valaree broke all the bones in Hawkheart's limbs with one tiny touch of a finger? fresh Recognition has its effects... wanted or not!

Arrowspeed is 'only' a hundred and a half - smart but selfish... as a cub she was called Arrow, because her father was Bowstring the archer... *hmm who does that remind me of?* She loves sex, dislikes children, fears only Reconginition and wolves... Hates her half-sister valaree who is pureblood... valaree nicknamed her Stormbringer and she deserves it! This girl is trouble.

Change?? Why nothing should be changed I like the pic itself.

I've only one thing to critique and it involves the line work. I think if you gave them a bit more definition in the linework it would make them stand out more. In some places the lines are thick but in others they kinda scratch out, if that makes any sense.

But pass that trivial bit of critique I like it Leanan Very Happy
