|
|
I posted this to the Elfquest page on FaceBook as well, but would like input from all quarters:
I am wondering, would people enjoy more a bulletin-board-like social experience (such as the Scroll of Colors is) on the new EQ site, or a more Facebook-ish social experience?
Please post your thoughts and reactions and suggestions here in this topic, or by PM if you wish. Thanks! |

What? Is there going to be a new site? Because if it is, then I really feel embarrassed for not knowing before now...
Anyway, I like it better as the forum is. _________________ If you die, I'll live. For you. |

Personally I prefer the board in general because of the ease of organizing information compared to facebook type networks. But if there was a way of seeing what the new type of organization would look like...
As for facebook itself, I use facebook for work (occasionally) and to keep in touch with close friends or acquaintances, I know I would not use it for EQ discussion, but I would like to see what other people feel about this

Well, I almost never check my facebook account, but I'm here almost everyday, if that tells you something.
But because I don't do much with facebook maybe I don't see the possibilities. I guess I would really have to see an example of how it would work to have an informed opinion.
I do have to agree with hnich that I appreciate the ability to easily find old topics and posts that I want here. I like being able to pick and choose what I want to spend my time here reading. I think everyone's posts in chronological order would overwhelm me and end up loosing my interest. One of the reasons I don't use facebook too much is because I hate having to filter through all the junk to get to the posts that have some real information. _________________ "Despite myself I got a floodlet of that warm 'n' fuzzy feeling like you're a scoop of ice cream and somebody's pouring hot butterscotch over you." - Brian D'Amato, In the Courts of the Sun |

I'm with hnic on this one. I prefer the bulletin board approach of the current Scroll of Colors. Mainly, my reasoning is aesthetic: I think that the antiseptic, highly-polished approach of a FaceBook-type format would be a poor match for warm and homespun community feeling that the less formal bulletin board format approximates. Outside of that, I would not want to see the ElfQuest board begin to look -- and feel -- like every other discussion forum or social site out there.
To my mind, the Scroll of Colors has forged its own identity regardless of its appearance. Whatever you decide to do, ElfPop, I'm sure she'll get along just fine whether she gets a new dress or not. _________________ "GRRRRAAAAAAH!" - Two-Edge (SaBM Vol. 1) |

I would not mind a(nother) social network if it included or existed side-by-side with a plain old forum. There's no reason it couldn't, right? Perhaps it'd be a blessing to leave the chitchat for live chat and/or twittery news update blurbs and attached comments, keeping at least some of the noise off the "real" discussion forum(s).
New school sites (like blogs) tend to "decay" posts quickly and sometimes lack the hierarchical (and immediately comprehensible) categorization of forums. I don't trust this whole "always search for everything" approach... I prefer stuff to stay roughly where I'd expect to find it rather than get fished from a big opaque barrel when I use the right tags.
Also, it should remain possible to sign up without revealing personal information. Regrettably, that is not the case with sites like Facebook that basically want your DNA on file. _________________ Join the #elfquest chat channel on irc.sorcery.net:9000! |

I'm with Nowth and hnich on this. I like the forum format. Something in addition might be nice, but I love the forum. _________________

I don't even have a facebook account due to the fact they want why too much personal information. I love the current forum style, but if the there was an additon to it without compremizing the forum itself why not? _________________ Who says you can't find true love |

I'm only on facebook to keep in touch with people that I don't talk to regularly by periodically noticing updates they post about random events in their lives. I actually communicate with people more consistently and in depth on this forum.
Personally, I like the forum a lot. It's a great set up. You can have ongoing conversations- but if you miss a few days, you can still come back and catch up. And I think it's pretty well organized, for what it is.
I really hope you keep this format! _________________ Kill some time.

Deopending on what sort of site foundation you will be going with - you might not need to choose between the two.
Many CMS's allow for both forums and facebook feeds or widgets.
But if you guys were set on choose just one or the other ... I'd vote for forums hands down in every sense.
Although if you are going with a CMS like Dolphin, pleaseeee do not use their default boards cuz they suck big time. If anyone isn't sure what Dolphin is, it's what deviantART is based off of before they started customizing it. And if any of you have tried DA's forums, well you *know* how badly they suck.
Same for the networking CMS that MySpace uses ... the default forums/boards for that just sucks, in my opinion.
vbulletin or phpBB (this the one you are using now) are hands down the best boards out there and they can be intregrated into practically any networking CMS.
Sorry - you start talking websites, and my inner geek comes out in full force. I can talk site stuff for hourssssssssss. _________________ ~Faerydae/Rainy |

I don't think there are any reason to change something that work perfectly.
Will all the posts in this forum be deleted when the new EQ page is up and running?
I personally think it would be a bit sad to see all the posts in this forum be flushed down the toilet. |
