Elfquest at 25

Welcome to the Elfquest Anniversary Chat Help Page!

Why a help page? The answer is easy: TwoMoons Mush will be host of the Chat Event for the 25th Anniversary of Elfquest, to take place on February 28th, 2003, and a Mush works different than a simple chat.

In the simplest of terms, a MUSH (Multi User Shared Hallucination) is an online game. However, it is a game in which multiple users can connect and interact in real time. Imagine an online computer game that is based on text, without any graphics. As in all games, you have to give commands to the program, in order to let the program know what you want. Since this is going to be a Chat Event, you don't need to roleplay on TwoMoons Mush - you can simply connect to chat. Still, you will need to know a few simple commands, which will be explained at the bottom of this page. These are what will get you logged on and into the Chat Room once you arrive.

Getting there

Some of you are already familiar with logging onto a Mush. Others of you are used to chatting via some other application (such as Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, ICQ, IRC, AOL/AIM, etc.) Because a Mush is different from these other chat systems, to participate you will either have to (1) download a client (see below), or (2) connect directly to the Java Applet, which will work under any web browser when you have Java enabled.

If you want to download and use your own client, use the Telnet application that comes with Windows, ZMud or SimpleMu (also for Windows), TinyFugue (for Linux/Unix), or Muddweller or MacMUSH for the Macintosh. (Each name links to a site where you can download the application.)

Connecting

For those of you already familiar with MU*s, simply connect to twomoonsmush.org, Port 4201.

All of you who have absolutely no clue what I am talking about, here's a step-by-step guide on how to connect to TwoMoons Mush, using SimpleMu and ZMud clients. (Whichever application you download and use, the setup and connect procedure will be similar; be sure to read the documentation that comes with the download.)

SimpleMu, as well as ZMud, don't require a lot of hard drive space, and use very little memory (RAM).

SimpleMu

First Part

After you have downloaded and installed SimpleMu, run the program and click on File from the Menu Bar. Then click on New Connection Wizard (screenshot).
A little window will open, which is the Connection Wizard that will lead you through the process.
In Step One you will have to enter the Host Address twomoonsmush.org and then clicking on Next (as shown in the screenshot).
Step Two asks you to fill in the Port Number, which in this case is 4201. Click on Next and you will come to Step Three.
Now you are asked what type of game you want to connect to, simply check the box next to MUSH, MUX or MOO, and click on Next.
Step Four just requires you to enter the name of the game, which will be TwoMoons Mush in this case.
Then click on Finish, close the window that opens, and you are finished with the First Step.

Second Part

Same as before, click on File, but instead of opening the Connection Wizard, open the Address Book (CTRL + D).
Choose the TwoMoons Mush Icon with your mouse, and click on Connect from the menu bar of the Address Book.
This will open a window, with some text scrolling down, and the login screen of TwoMoons Mush will appear. (screenshot)

The commands are explained at the bottom of the page.

ZMud

Though the latest version of ZMud is shareware, it might be better to download the older, unsupported software (Version v3.62), which is free software, and not as difficult as the newest version. Simply follow the link http://www.zuggsoft.com/zmud/down.asp#zMUD (simply scroll down on the page), or download it directly here.

First Part

After having downloaded it, extract the zip-file into a new folder called ZMud and run the program (by double-clicking on zmud.exe).
ZMud will then open, plus a window which says Welcome to ZMud. Click on Connection Wizard to open a window which will help you to connect to the game. (screenshot)
As soon as the Connection Wizard opens, you will see a window with five fields you have to fill out.
Simply type this in for the specific fields:

Name: TwoMoons Mush
Type: MUSH
Host: twomoonsmush.org
Addr.: twomoonsmush.org
Port: 4201

And then click on Connect, which will immediately connect you to the game by opening a window. The Auto-Connection Wizard will ask you if you want to save the information, simply choose No.

Second Part

In case you should accidentally close the window, or the program, simply open the program again, and click on File, and then Another Character.
Choose TwoMoons Mush from the Stored Characters Window, and click on Connect.

The commands are explained at the bottom of the page.

Telnet - the mother of all clients

Telnet is the most easiest program of all - and the most painful. I would recommend using Telnet just for advanced computer program users, because simplicity means complexity with this program.
If you should want to use Telnet, you can click on this link, and Telnet will open and directly connect to TwoMoons Mush.
Before you do that, though, you should make sure to change some things in the setting of Telnet.

Steps

Click on Start, then Run, and type Telnet into the field.
Telnet will then open.
Choose Terminal from the menu, and then Preferences. A window opens with the Terminal Preferences, and you need to check the following boxes from the Terminal Options: Local Echo, Block Cursor, and VT100 Arrows (First, Third and Fourth).
Make sure to check VT-100/ANSI in the Emulation field.
Click on OK and close Telnet.
Then click on this link, where Telnet will open and directly connects you to TwoMoons Mush.

The commands are explained at the bottom of the page.

Necessary MUSH commands

As soon as the login screen appears, you will either have to login with your user name, or as a guest character.

If you want to create and login with a user name (permanent), simply type this command line, without the brackets (<>), and hit enter:
create <username> <password>
When you log in the next time, you just need to type this, instead of using the command 'create' again (because you are already created), and of course without the brackets:
connect <username> <password>

Don't forget to write your username and password down, so that you don't forget it!!!

If you want to log in as a guest (temporary), type this in, and hit enter:
connect guest guest

The difference here is, that the first will create a character for you, with just your name, so that you will have a character that carries your name.
When you connect to TwoMoons Mush on February 28th, it will just be a temporarily character, which means that it will just exist for this special day. When you log in before that day, it will be a permanent character, unless you tell us you just wanted to come to TwoMoons Mush to look at it beforehand, but don't intend to come back after the Chat Event day.
Remember, Guest characters are always temporary, and will not be saved.

As soon as you have chosen a name, you will be in the Main Chat room. This is the room where the Elfquest anniversary chat will be held, so you don't have to navigate anywhere else.

In order to say something, you will have to type (without the brackets), and hit enter:
say <text> (as in: say hello there - which will appear as: You say, "Hello there" - and to others: Fridolin says, "Hello there")

If you want to emote, simply type a colon, plus some text:
:<text> (i.e. :bounces around wildly - Fridolin bounces around wildly)

You also can modify your emote, which would be a semicolon, followed by text:
;<text> (i.e. ;'s arms hang loose - Fridolin's arms hang loose)

There even is the possibility of talking privately to a person:
page <name>=<text> (i.e. page Cutter=Hey, how are you? - You page Cutter with 'Hey, how are you?' - Fridolin pages: Hey, how are you?)

If you want to see who is online, type who and hit enter. If you want to have more information, instead of just the people who are connected, you can type +who which will give you a list of various information, simply test it out.

When you are in the room, you might want to see who else is in the room. That is done with a simple command: look
You can even look at the things and people in the room, by simply typing: look <thing> (i.e. look cutter; look help)

These are the main commands you will need to know. If there is any further need for help, you can type in help, +help and/or news, which will give you a list of help files available.
You can also ask the Book Characters (i.e. Cutter, Wing, Kahvi, etc.) for help via page <name>=<text> (i.e. page wing=Help!)

I hope TwoMoons Mush can make this event for everyone a special day, and that you enjoy the time you spend at TwoMoons Mush. Don't be afraid to Email me with questions about the Mush, or about this Helppage. I will gladly help out as much as I can. If you should happen to log on into TwoMoons Mush, and type who and see Coldmist there, feel free to page me. No matter if you just want to say Hello, or ask me questions.

Have fun!
