Elfquest Timeline

7 YEARS AFTER ELFQUEST # 1
# 9 - 32 (Graphic Novel 2 - 4)

Elfquest # 9 "The Quest Begins"
Cutter is out with his cubs Ember and Suntop. Nightrunner no longer leads the pack. Leetah throws a knife, scaring off a scorpion on Ember's foot. Suntop says he can feel their magic in Redlance's thorny plants. Ember will be the next chief. Leetah recalls their birth. They were the first twins born of either tribe. Five years passed and they grew quickly. She came to love Cutter. Dart trains with an arrow whip when Strongbow sees something. Skywise is with a Sun Village maiden. He hears a howl and gathers with the other Wolfriders. Humans are here, three adults and a child. Even Woodlock wants them dead. Redlance wants to hear what they have to say. They say demons came from the sky to take their world. Humans must destroy them. They believe this is a punishment for burning the forest. They travelled in the direction of sun-goes-down and joined another tribe. The man's brother became mad and they were driven out. Woodlock fires, but misses purposely. The sick human dies. Cutter tells them to leave or die. Strongbow challenges Cutter. Bearclaw wouldn't have done that. Cutter says he's not Bearclaw. It's a battle of wills and Strongbow loses. Humans will come, nothing will stop them. They tell Savah. Cutter wonders if the High Ones are still alive. Are there other elves? They must be together against the humans. He tells Leetah he can't leave his family but she talks him into it.

Elfquest # 10 "Return to the Holt"
Cutter will give himself a year and then return. If he's gone too long they'll come after him. Leetah is speaking to Skywise. He says goodbye to them all. He'll ride a zwoot and Nightrunner will walk. Skywise comes with him. He promised Leetah. They're going to the trolls to get information about other elves. A half-day later they find the Tunnel of Golden Light clear. The caves are deserted. They go through a doorway and see what's left of their holt. Father Tree is a charred stump. Picknose and Maggoty watch them. Cutter has the sword and doesn't realize what it is. Starjumper scents them and Picknose throws powder, knocking them all out. Cutter and Skywise awake in their hut. Maggoty's granddaughter Oddbit is also there. Cutter lunges but finds that he's chained. Picknose gets too close and Cutter bites him. The wolves are trying to get in. Picknose grabs more powder. Cutter and Skywise send for the wolves to run. Picknose looks out and they're gone. Oddbit wants a party. Cutter and Skywise will be their servants. Cutter plans to find out what happened to the trolls. Picknose and Oddbit plan to get married. Maggoty's wine is brought out. It's made of dreamberries. Bearclaw had a taste for it. Cutter and Skywise try it and like it.

Elfquest # 11 "The Dreamberry Tales"
Picknose removes the pommel of New Moon. It's a key! Troll warriors from the Frozen Mountains attacked through a sealed off tunnel. His forefathers lived at the top of the world. Big sheets of ice moved down, filling crevices and shaking the tunnels. They made their way to a warmer area and settled here. They learned metal-work and gardening. Eventually King Guttlekraw decided to return to their home. A young Greymung led a rebellion and won. Guttlekraw's followers were driven through a tunnel and sealed off. They kept secret when the Wolfriders came but Bearclaw discovered Maggoty taking dreamberries. They traded. Because of the Wolfriders they grew soft. They were unprepared when Guttlekraw's warriors attacked. Most were killed or taken prisoner. Cutter asks where to find elves but Picknose changes the subject. He carried Oddbit and Maggoty out. Picknose has Two-Edge's word that the key leads to a "golden treasure." He's the greatest metalsmith, half elf on his mother's side. He comes and goes, sometimes in the north, sometimes here. He leaves his handiwork where trolls can find and learn. He's crazy from mixed blood. Picknose heard him in the caves, telling about the treasure. Skywise throws dust and they start climbing out. Cutter pulls Skywise out of his manacles and they ride off. Skywise hid the pommel in his mouth. They head for "sun-goes-down". Picknose screams when he finds the key gone.

Elfquest # 12 "Hands of the Symbol Maker"
It's been two months since Cutter and Skywise left. Ember calls her first wolf-friend out of its den. She calls him Choplicker. Moonshade and Strongbow say Leetah's place is at Cutter's side. Leetah runs off and Nightfall goes after her. She has the right to keep her own customs. Leetah says it's pride and fear. She's afraid of what she can't control. Cutter and Skywise catch a no-hump that kicked Nightrunner in the face. They head in the direction of sun-goes-down for days until they come to a dark gloomy forest. Cutter saves a drowning squirrel and is bitten. He falls in the filthy water. Their old instincts reawaken. They sense that elves were once here. They walk through the branches and take cover in the rain. The next day Cutter becomes listless and moody. The next day he's unconscious. The water poisoned the bite. Skywise leaves to find leaves. Cutter sees his father's mysterious wolf-friend Blackfell. He leads him to his parents. He tells them he can't join them yet. He runs blindly. He's running across the Burning Waste. A signal fire is in the village. Leetah is there. He falls. A woman is near a fire. Nonna tries to help, but Nightrunner attacks. Her mate, Adar, burns his face. He runs. Cutter is surprised humans could be kind. She says he's a bird-spirit from the mountain. Skywise finds whistle-leaf. Nightrunner leads him to the human den and he attacks.

Elfquest # 13 "The Warning and the Way"
Skywise attacks but Cutter stops him. They helped him. Skywise remembers Wolfrider skulls on the humans' pillar of sacrifice, One-Eye losing his eye, and his mother's face on a human raft, as she sent him down the river. Nonna takes them to a room that looks shaped. She shows her paintings of bird-spirits and their mountain home beyond the Valley of Endless Sleep. She thinks Cutter and Skywise are bird-spirits. Sorrow's End: Suntop has his magic feeling again. Savah went out and can't come back. Ahdri calls Leetah in, but she can't help. Suntop tries to communicate. Savah's obsessed with guiding Cutter. There's something evil he mustn't find. Suntop says it won't come out of his head until he's with Cutter. The Wolfriders prepare. Many Sun Folk are upset Leetah's leaving. Suntoucher reasons with them. Leetah feels she encouraged them to be dependent. Dart will stay and teach them to fight. Strongbow disapproves but supports him. Woodlock, Rainsong (with-cub), Wing, and Newstar stay. Nonna and Adar are exiles from Olbar's tribe. She would like to have people around her again. Cutter wants to help them go back to their tribe. Skywise sees he's different than Bearclaw, being able to accept and take advantage of change. The Wolfriders cross the desert. Adar presented Nonna as his bride. Bone Woman said she's an outsider from a land of evil demons.

Elfquest # 14 "The Lodestone"
Skywise shows Nonna and Adar his magic stone. The next day Cutter and Skywise follow them above. A bear attacks and they bring it down with arrows. The humans reach the village and the Bone Woman screams they're evil and to kill them. They're surrounded. Chief Olbar comes forward. Their return means death. Nonna says the spirits are good. Cutter and Skywise come with a deer. If they accept Nonna and Adar, good fortune is theirs. The meat is a token of their good faith. Olbar has been to the Forbidden Grove and tasted their vengeance before. He mentions "little winged ones." The Wolfriders reach the cliff in the desert. Ember finds elf bones in a cave. Suntop feels the rocks were moved by magic. Leetah assumes they're Rayek's remains. Suntop guides them to a pass. The humans celebrate with a feast. Cutter and Skywise arrive and dancing begins. Bone Woman and a thief want the stone. He'll get his name back. Nonna and Adar lead the elves to the river and the falls. The thief reaches for the stone and Skywise cuts his thumb off. Olbar, his brother, took his name away. Cutter thanks his new friends. Bone Woman wants the thief to kill them. Nightrunner won't be going. He's too tired and old. Starjumper will look after him. As they prepare to descend, the thief watches with a sling.

Elfquest # 15 "The Forbidden Grove"
Cutter and Skywise see the Valley of Endless Sleep and Blue Mountain in the distance. The Wolfriders are on the far side. Suntop says it's dangerous here. Strongbow aims at a bird and Suntop warns him not to kill it. Too late. Skywise is hit with a rock and knocked out. The thief wants the stone to get their powers. Cutter will kill him, but he laughs. Cutter stabs him and he falls, grabbing the stone. Skywise falls over too, grabbing a branch. Cutter climbs down to him. He can't climb and hold Skywise, who has a broken arm. Olbar pulls them up. He asks what they are. They only say humans never needed to fear them. His daughter Selah ran into the Forbidden Grove with a boy he dispised. Winged spirits kept him out. The two never returned. He points the way. Cutter and Skywise agree to help. They howl farewell to Nightrunner and Starjumper. Two howls answer them. Sunset: The Wolfriders' camp was attacked, only the wolves are there. Cutter misses Nightrunner and his family. Skywise shows him the two stars he gave he and Leetah on their joining night are overhead, always together. They run the rest of the way laughing. The grove has webbing hanging everywhere. Cutting one open, a bird flies out. It keeps meat fresh. Did the winged spirits do it? Skywise rests, Cutter searches. He cuts a wolf cub free. It has Ember's scent! He heads back. Winged spirits are blowing wrapstuff on Skywise.

Elfquest # 16 "Noisybad Highthing!"
Winged spirits are wrapping Skywise. Cutter grabs one but can't crush it. He grabs its wing and it begs. Petalwing won't tell where Ember is and sprays him in the face. Cutter runs further into the forest, followed by Skywise. A weak, unskilled sending answers. He finds a large bundle and cuts it open. Leetah, Ember, and Suntop are inside. They all hug and group send. Strongbow brought down a huge bird. Seven more birds attacked. Suntop and Ember jumped in a basket on a zwoot. Leetah grabbed hold as it ran into the woods. Suntop led them, sensing Cutter. At night they rested. Choplicker wandered off. Suntop has a message for Cutter in his head. He and Cutter go off alone. Skywise is healed. Cutter discovers the danger has to do with Blue Mountain. Petalwing remembers a "belonging-time" and flies into Leetah's hair. Cutter pulls it out and throws. Cutter swings through branches with Ember. Leetah wonders if she and Suntop will ever feel at home in Cutter's world. At night Cutter and Leetah go off alone. She's scared until fireflies come out. It's beautiful. It's a dance of joining. They do their own joining dance. They awake with their legs wrapped. Cutter finds a very large wrapstuff mound and cuts it. Olbar's daughter Selah and Malak come out. They hear howls of other Wolfriders. Cutter, Leetah, Skywise, Ember, Suntop, and Nightfall meet in a clearing where the humans are.

Elfquest # 17 "Lair of the Bird Spirits"
Cutter tells Nightfall to let the humans go. Redlance says the birds swooped down and picked the others up. Redlance and Nightfall dove into a pond. They took the wolves and went in Leetah's direction. Scouter saw riders on the birds. They'll go to Blue Mountain, even with the warning. In the winding passages of Blue Mountain, Strongbow is caged. A tall female elf, Winnowill keeps hitting him with a painful sending. Tyldak, a winged elf, stands beside her. Strongbow resists. Moonshade begs her to stop and soon she does. Humans leave offerings at the mountain base. They wait for the "honored one" who doesn't fly a bond-bird. One-Eye takes the meat and returns to Smoke-Treader. His sendings are blocked. The wolves sense someone coming. The Hoan G'tay Sho means "favored of those who dwell on high." Nonna was one of them. Two young humans will be sent up. One-Eye's howls are answered. He meets with Cutter and the others. When Clearbrook was taken he grabbed on, but fell. The others are inside, but they mustn't let the "bad one" know how many they are. Cutter goes to the humans and they bow. Those inside hear the pipes stop. Winnowill orders Door, a motionless elf, open. Wolfriders enter the passage. Petalwing blinds Tyldak and Cutter pins Winnowill. He sends to Treestump, Pike, Scouter, and Moonshade. Dewshine, Clearbrook, and Strongbow are held back. Winnowill harms Cutter's arm.

Elfquest # 18 "Riddle of Blue Mountain"
Winnowill runs, knocking Treestump and Pike down. Tyldak and seven floating elves attack. They use claws on ropes as weapons. Cutter pulls and knocks one into a wall. Winnowill runs up the steps towards Strongbow. Moonshade heads up and her wolf grabs Winnowill's robes. Winnowill hurts Strongbow again. Leetah reaches in, touching his hand. Her healing force protects him. They were captured because of the bird they killed. They must be slaves or go free, leaving Strongbow. Cutter won't agree to it. Winnowill says they've degenerated and have no honor. She leads them through the mountain to see Lord Voll. Leetah sends to Cutter, glad the cubs aren't here. Winnowill smiles. Clearbrook is here. They killed Kureel's fledgling, now he must wait for a year. Winnowill says they should kill Strongbow's Briersting. Leetah mentions cubs and Voll is interested. The Gliders cannot have children. Soon Redlance, Ember, and Suntop see birds. Nightfall sends from it. The cubs are brought inside. Voll is happy and frees Strongbow. He asks them to stay. Winnowill says the Gliders are the High Ones. Most don't believe her, Suntop says she's the evil thing. They're given privacy and Cutter asks where Dewshine is. No one dreamed it could happen. Dewshine is in Tyldak's chambers with a trapped Petalwing. If Voll saw it his thoughts would leap to the future. She hears Cutter's call and runs.

Elfquest # 19 "What is the Way?"
Dewshine returns to the others. Strongbow feels the tribe is forgetting the way. He remembers hunts and howls. Tyldak comes to Dewshine and leads her away. It's Recognition. Leetah goes off. Dewshine looked like she was pleading. Leetah speaks to Door but he doesn't answer. She gets the same from one called Brace. Winnowill says he prevents the weak archway from falling. She walks with Leetah. Leetah talks about her people and Savah. Winnowill says, "It seems she has touched me... like the fluttering of a moth's wing." They see Dewshine and Tyldak. Winnowill shaped his wings so he could fly like a bird. Gliders return with new clothes for Cutter. Leetah returns to the Wolfriders. Skywise speaks to Aroree, one of the Chosen Eight. He envies her, being close to the sky. She takes him up Littletrill. Skywise is scared but suddenly the world is both larger and smaller. She throws a spear to the humans as a gift. They fly towards a body of water, called Vastdeep Water. Skywise is dropped off on a peak and left alone. The Wolfriders argue over what to do, who to trust. Cutter says they all must get along. Strongbow thinks Cutter will change them. Skywise, Redlance, and Nightfall stand by Cutter. There's more to life than the hunt and howl. Outside, wolves howl. Skywise hears Starjumper. Nightrunner doesn't need looking after anymore. They howl for an old friend who once led the pack.

Elfquest # 20 "Fine Feathers"
The council decides to stay. Strongbow and Moonshade leave to keep the way alive. He sends to a female Door to open. Dewshine watches. A hole forms and they walk out. Winnowill hopes they lose faith in Cutter. She and Tyldak agree Voll mustn't see the Preserver. Dewshine hears. Sorrow's End: Savah's body has grown frail. Sun-Toucher fears her spirit is being held. Dart instructs villagers in the arrow-whip. Winnowill runs into Voll. Tyldak goes to take care of the Preserver. All isn't well with the Wolfriders. He sends to them, apologizing. Dewshine smashes the cage, freeing Petalwing. Tyldak strikes her, but then comforts her. Winnowill hears her soul-name and uses it to hurt. Tyldak stops her. The Wolfriders and Gliders eat. Ember asks if they're High Ones. Voll says Winnowill never lies in his presence. Treestump says the High Ones fell from the sky in a mountain-thing. Voll says the firstcomers wandered far, then he was born. The young of new generations rebelled against him. He feared the world would change them, so Blue Mountain was shaped. The Gliders once dwelled in a green place. He asks how the Wolfriders began. As Cutter stands, Leeta spills wine, then knocks over a candle. Pike gets the shirt off, knocking him down. Aroree takes Skywise, Scouter, and Pike to the Egg. It rotates, with six eggs inside, containing secrets of existence. An elf named Egg shapes it. The egg is out of control. Pike gave Egg wine. They all run as Winnowill approaches.

Elfquest # 21 "The Secret of the Wolfriders"
Skywise, Pike, and Scouter explore and find Dewshine. She wants to save Petalwing. Winnowill cleanses Egg's mind when Leetah enters. She wants the Wolfriders to leave. Cutter listens. Leetah doesn't fear her power. She says Leetah revealed a weakness when she kept Cutter from revealing their origins. The Wolfriders must be ignorant of the price they pay. Leetah wants them to remain ignorant. Cutter comes in. Winnowill says to think of their children. Cutter pins her down, holding his sword. He won't give up. She sees a land of frozen mountains where elves struggle to survive. One was Timmain, a High One. She sought aid from wolves, taking their form. She brought the tribe food. She became more wolf as time went on and gave birth to something not entirely wolf. He was named Timmorn Yellow Eyes, protector of elves and wolves, drawing them together. They were led by he and his father to green woods. He had cubs in and outside Recognition, passing the blood down. No Wolfrider died of old age. Leetah convinces him not to kill Winnowill. Petalwing wraps her and she runs. Tyldak chases it. Cutter says the truth is good. They must make Voll remember. Humans bathe Winnowill in her chambers. They fear and love her. Two-Edge's voice asks, "Where are his bones?" He says Voll will dream a waking dream. Cutter and Leetah find Scouter. Dewshine's sick from refusing Recognition. Petalwing flies in. Winnowill, Kureel, and Tyldak watch.

Elfquest # 22 "The Fall"
Voll listens to Ember and Suntop during dinner. Kureel, Tyldak, and some of the Chosen Eight attack. Voll commands them to stop, then slumps forward. Winnowill grabs Suntop and runs. She calls to Two-Edge and a sculpture shatters. She enters a tunnel below. By the time Cutter gets there it closes. He threatens Tyldak. She will only return the cub when they leave. Strongbow and Moonshade sit outside and receive a sending. Strongbow forces Door open. He apologizes to Cutter. Cutter yells to Two-Edge he's Cutter Kinseeker, owner of New Moon. The passage opens and they all go in. Petalwing remembers. Winnowill carries Suntop to where old humans are brought. She sent the Preservers away for Voll's sake. Old age is the price Wolfriders pay. Savah is at the edge of her mind and won't keep much longer. He goes into her mind, searching. She can bargain with his body. Two-Edge asks, "What if they come for you?" The Wolfriders reach the tunnel of globes. Strongbow kicks one and they explode. No one is hurt. Winnowill goes to her chambers, asking the humans to defend her. The Wolfriders arrive and climb up a pillar onto a vine net. It's strangleweed! It grabs hold of them. Strongbow fires, hitting Winnowill's shoulder. Suntop finds Savah. Winnowill needs healing in body and mind. Suntop goes back and tells Leetah. Petalwing attacks the humans. Winnowill grabs Suntop and Leetah cuts herself free, falling.

Elfquest # 23 "The Awakening"
Leetah falls to the floor and chases Winnowill. Winnowill runs up a staircase. She hits Leetah with a black sending. The Wolfriders and Petalwing follow. Leetah wants to heal her, touching her face. It burns. Winnowill steps over the edge and falls. Savah is free. Winnowill calls Two-Edge for help. Cutter and his family embrace. Leetah wakes Voll up. They tell him everything. He sees Petalwing and can't believe it. Winnowill sent them away. Once she was his friend and lovemate. She was devoted to guiding others in the ways of the firstcomers. Blue Mountain was shaped. She disappeared for a time and returned changed. Dewshine collapses. Tyldak tells Voll what happened. Voll says it should be a blessing. Scouter says he'll love the cub no matter what. They fly off together. Leetah shows Cutter Rayek's finger bone found in the Burning Waste. Voll floats above the Egg. They're not High Ones. The world inside is corrupt. He's ashamed. The home of the High Ones is a great palace, alive with magic. Petalwing can lead them there. It points towards the land of white-cold. Two-Edge is with Winnowill, calling her mother. Voll wants them to come. Skywise takes Cutter outside. Skywise still dreams of touching the stars. Cutter says maybe when Ember is chief. He tells Voll they need time and a new holt. The tribe can't risk all. White-cold is coming. Soon Voll flies the oldest bird, Tenspan.

Elfquest # 24 "The Quest Usurped!"
The Wolfriders watch Voll. Tyldak and Dewshine agree to go their separate ways. The cubs want a ride. Cutter and Ember go with Voll, Leetah and Suntop with Aroree. Cutter soon asks him to land but he won't. Voll will force them to follow. Cutter sends to Tyldak, the Wolfriders aren't to follow. They run for the forest. Voll circles and they assume they're to follow. Soon Voll stops for a rest. Cutter's family is guarded. Aroree obeys Voll because Skywise opened her eyes. Voll sends to them all, showing the homeplace. They see it with their hearts and minds. Anger fades. After several days it becomes cold and white. They sense its presence behind the frozen mountains. A huge arrow flies out of a hole, going through Tenspan and Voll. They hit the ground, Cutter rolls free with Ember. Voll is pulled free, dead. An arrow goes through Tyldak's wing. A group of savage trolls attack. Cutter and Strongbow kill two of them. The Gliders abandon them. Scouter is grabbed but Dewshine's Trollhammer saves him. Leetah heads for cover with the cubs. One grabs Ember and Leetah hits him in the eye with a knife. Moonshade and Scouter are hurt. A spear impales Cutter in the side. Skywise kills the troll. Cutter won't leave the others. He'll see the home of the High Ones through Leetah's eyes. One-Eye falls. Cutter protects Clearbrook and falls. Riders on stags save them. Clearbrook leaves her braid on One-Eye, saying she'll always be with him.

Elfquest # 25 "The Go-Backs"
Petalwing finds One-Eye. Cutter's unconscious. He sees Bearclaw. It's wrong to get muddled by dreams. Savah says it's to late to bring the tribes together. A spear goes through Voll and Cutter. He awakes. Elves wearing fur carry the wounded into their lodge. Dewshine is with Scouter, knowing he must learn of his father. Clearbrook only stares. Treestump recalls losing his lifemate Rillfisher. The others are fortunate. Leetah, Skywise, and the cubs are with Cutter. His heart wants to die. A covered elf comes in and helps her. Scouter learns the truth. They all hear Cutter's cry. Clearbrook rides out on Whitebrow. Cutter will live. The stranger reveals he's Rayek. Leetah hugs him and goes to help others. A while later Rayek brings Leetah and puts her in the furs with Cutter. Pike, Scouter, and Treestump find Clearbrook. One-Eye is gone. Smoketreader's howls led her. Cutter awakes. Now Rayek owes him nothing. Chief of the Go-Backs, Kahvi, comes in. She asks Leetah if she shares. Leetah introduces the cubs to Rayek. She's happy to be wrong. Rayek takes Leetah outside to meet Ekuar. He's an old elf, missing an arm and a leg. He's a rockshaper and Rayek's teacher. Seven years ago Rayek traveled the desert for days. He reached the cliff and entered the Tunnel of Golden Light. When trolls attacked he froze them and made rocks fall. He ran, chased through Greymung's chamber. He found Ekuar, enslaved since childhood. Ekuar sealed the trolls off. He taught Rayek to extend his powers. More trolls came and he floated Ekuar.

Elfquest # 26 "Two Edge's Clue"
Leetah tells Rayek about visions of the Palace. Rayek can now fly like a glider. A troll war started so Rayek and Ekuar escaped through a tunnel to the Frozen Mountains. Ekuar knew of the Palace. They went deep into the mountains, but a voice misguided them, leading them here. Leetah joins a howl for One-Eye and Woodshaver. Kahvi joins Rayek. The Go-Backs have been without Recognition for a long time. The Wolfriders have much in common with them. Skywise learns the Palace has been calling for twelve eights and then some. They all learn to get along. All thoughts are on battle. The Wolfriders join the Go-Backs' dance, honoring their dead. Cutter is withdrawn and moody. Kahvi says maybe it was his time. Knowing a healer's around makes one careless and soft. Leetah will always fight death. Rayek tells Cutter he misjudged him. Cutter's been through a lot and won't be stopped by trolls. The mountains are riddled with traps. Two Edge says they must go under the mountains. Rayek knows the voice. He has Petalwing. Cutter and Rayek move forward. Cutter falls into a pit with three hungry wolves. Petalwing comes down. Trolls in the cavern look down. Rayek floats Cutter up and he attacks them. He knocks them into the pit. They climp up. Ember brags that she made Rayek help, and he puts snow in her coat. Night: The Go-Backs are at war over the Palace. Rayek's not powerful enough to float over the mountains. Two Edge can get them into the tunnels. The Wolfriders will fight with them. The Go-Backs dance for battle, joined by Wolfriders.

Elfquest # 27 "The First War"
The Go-Backs and Wolfriders dance. Children are herded upstairs. Shyness and self-restraint are flung aside. Some stay with lifemates. Some Go-Backs and Wolfriders join together. Leetah fears it might be the last time. Cutter knows he's far from death. Leetah goes to Rayek. Kahvi comes to Cutter. She says only he can win the war. She wants him to hold her. Redlance and their wolf-friends will guard the cubs. Nightfall can stay with him by giving him her soulname. Cutter and Leetah say goodbye to their cubs. The Wolfriders and forty Go-Backs go to the hole Cutter fell in. Rayek floats Ekuar down. Handholds form on the sides of the pit. Cutter goes down and leads the big gray and the other wolves up. Three trolls attack and are slaughtered by them. Cutter tells Leetah there must be no mercy. Petalwing leads them to a crawl-hole. Guttlekraw's throne chamber: He knows something is going on and questions Oddbit. Two Edge says there are invaders. The elves come out above a mining chamber. Greymung's trolls are slaves. Picknose and Maggoty are there. Arrows fly. Cutter yells he's here to help them. The trolls cut their chains and attack their captors. Picknose came looking for the treasure. If he helps, the treasure's his. Petalwing says they must reach the big door, now closing. They all run towards it. Rayek floats Ekuar and Leetah over to the door. More trolls attack. Ekuar makes an opening in the door. The others run for it. Vaya pushes Kahvi in and fights trolls. She heads in, but a troll pulls her out. The hole closes. Vaya's gone.

Elfquest # 28 "The Treasure"
Scouter gets into it with Picknose. The look on Clearbrook's face is the same as Bearclaw's when Joyleaf was killed by Madcoil. Moonshade and Strongbow will remind them all of the way. Picknose says Guttlekraw knew they were coming and started shielding the castle. Leetah heals Pike. He's sent to Vaya, but gets no response. Guttlekraw wants to know how many there are and what they seek. The elf fingers on his head are from rock-shapers. Vaya grabs a sword and cuts Guttlekraw. Three guards stab her. She smiles as she sees what she fought for and won, the Palace. She dies. They'll strike through their children in the lodge. Two-Edge picks up her body. She'll teach them how to keep their blood inside, with metal. He leaves through a secret door. Picknose leads the elves by feel. Ekuar has seen the Palace. Humans guarded it after it fell. They killed elves who returned. The great cold krept in and elves and humans moved south. Three young rock-shapers, Ekuar, Osek, and Mekda got in and were enslaved by trolls. Ice came and Guttlekraw used Ekuar and Osek to tunnel beneath the Wolfrider holt. He last saw Osek during Greymung's rebellion, escaping through the Tunnel of Golden Light. Leetah found a skeleton that must've been him. They reach a fork with guards coming. A message from Two-Edge tells them to burrow through a wall. They climb steps and reach large golden doors. Picknose wants the key. Cutter throws it to Skywise, who opens the doors. It's a room full of armor, swords, and shields. Vaya is in one, someone wrapstuffed in another.

Elfquest # 29 "The Game of Two-Edge"
Clearbrook senses One-Eye in the bundle. Kahvi says tears come later. Leetah says if she cared for Vaya she'd understand. Rayek says Vaya was Kahvi's daughter. The armor is worthless to Picknose. Two-Edge says it's for them. They see hatred in a statue behind bars. Two-Edge shows himself and laughs. Torchlight makes them appear gold. He planned for Newmoon to reach Cutter. Leetah goes to One-Eye and is in disbelief. She stops Scouter from unwrapping him. Cutter puts on armor and Treestump strikes him, leaving not a dent. They all do the same. Picknose is angry at Two-Edge, so he sides with the elves. Trolls must side against elves, so it's even. Cutter must part with Leetah. He'll get answers. This close to the Palace Leetah feels power. They head out. Leetah's own private battle begins. Nightfall sends to Redlance at the lodge. He tells the Go-Back children about green places. Nearby, trolls set sack-o-bones down. The bundle moves to the rock wall of the lodge. Suntop senses magic being used. Two-Edge knows if they unite his plans are undone. Mother told him the low blood cancels the high. Guttlekraw knows the elves have a rockshaper. But they don't have metal. Two-Edge is secretly watching the elves in the tunnels. They come to a chasm. Ekuar makes a bridge. When the elves are across, Two-Edge bags Ekuar and smashes the bridge with a boulder, separating trolls from elves. At the lodge, a hole forms in the wall. Redlance sees a mindless elf with no arms and legs. Trolls are coming. Rayek stays in the caves to help the trolls.

Elfquest # 30 "Final Battles"
Trolls are cutting a slab for Rayek to move. Trolls report to Guttlekraw no trace of the elves. Two-Edge comes, not an ally of either side, to watch. The full guard assemble at the gate. They hear wolf howls. Three trolls see wolves in the tunnel and reflections of weapons. They warn the others. The elves come in with full armor and the battle begins. Two-Edge watches, impressed with what he set up. Cutter and Kahvi draw first blood. Strongbow doesn't like using a sword over a bow. Treestump hacks away. Cutter bonds what he knows with Dewshine. Clearbrook and Scouter battle with a strange calm. A sword catches in Skywise's armor and he falls. He sees a dead Go-Back. The armor can be broken. He's paralyzed with fright and Cutter can't come to him. His heart starts to harden with resentment. Nightfall helps him. Redlance defends the cubs at the lodge. Cubs like Ember try to join in. Ekuar's hand reaches to the floor and traps Two-Edge's feet. Ekuar bounces to the floor, calling Rayek. The slab is down and he and the trolls run in. He saves Ekuar. Two-Edge wants freed but Ekuar won't do it. Rayek goes to the gate, slowly raising it. Picknose attacks Guttlekraw. Petalwing is hit, but saved by Cutter. The wolves attack Guttlekraw, tearing him up. Kahvi cuts his head off. Rayek has the gate raised enough. The Go-Backs celebrate. Cutter and others return to Leetah. Elfquest # 31 "Quest's End"
A shy she-wolf walks off. The Wolfriders and Go-Backs find the aftermath of a battle at the lodge. Dewshine's Trollhammer is dead. Ekuar finds what's left of Mekda. Nightfall finds Redlance under a troll's body. She sends, asking for his soul name. She'll never force him to be what he isn't. He's Ulm. They come together as one. It's more than Recognition, they've taken it for themselves. Leetah failed. One-Eye's body lives but his soul is gone. Clearbrook says she did all she could. Go-Backs chant for their dead. Kahvi weeps for Vaya. Yif is barely alive but asks to be placed with the dead. Wolfriders join them in song. Two-Edge watches, not at peace. The elves come to the Palace, a dome half-contructed around it. The she-wolf scratches at it. Rayek flies Ekuar over. Picknose's trolls get a piece off the dome. They enter. Suntop feels his magic feeling all over. The she-wolf seems sick, but Suntop touches her mind. She becomes an Timmain. Cutter says there have been nine descendants since Timmorn. She sends to Strongbow. He sees her thoughts, movement through space, about to take his soul name. He turns away. She says to let One-Eye choose. Only Timmorn's descendants go where they will after death. Those born of Recognition attract other spirits. Death made them stronger. Petalwing can take them to the Scroll of Colors. Rayek places it in a hole above the doorway. It pushes and pulls until the door opens. Orolin's cocoon is torn, he's dead. She takes his place and is wrapped. Cutter wonders if she's ashamed of them. Behind them a large scroll rises.

Elfquest # 32 "Quest's End" Part Two
Timmain speaks through Suntop as the scroll turns. Early High Ones tamed their world and became too many. Some found other worlds. Their descendents returned to ease the planet through the end of its life. Death and birth happened less and they could change at will. Their spirits could go out, but they chose their bodies. They became immortal with no new growth, so took to the stars in shells. Ground-digging apes and winged insects were taken. Air and food were created from matter in space. They visited many worlds in secret. The shells were suffused with shape-changing magic, changing the pets into trolls and preservers, becoming long-lived and gaining speech. Timmain's group never met another shell. They found a two-mooned world that depicted immortals. Were they High Ones? They took on shapes to match the images. As the shell came down, a troll slashed the Guiders' cocoons, putting them off-course, into the past. Bestial humans killed the first one out. They escaped and humans claimed the Palace. They learned to survive. The Sun Villagers see it through Suntop as Rainsong gives birth to a Mender. Wolfriders alone share blood with beasts of this world, they have a right to call it their own. Winnowill realizes the child is the link. Strongbow says if clinging to the way was blindness, he wishes he'd never been made to see. Nightfall says the way is a small truth within a bigger one. Kahvi's angry at the trolls for what their ancestors did. Rayek says all she knows is war. Cutter is through with war, he'll live with his enemies. Kahvi punches him. He'll keep the scar to remind him of her when he's tempted to slash first and think later. Rayek will repair the Palace. Skywise is staying so he can touch the stars. He wonders when Cutter got so much older. There's a chance One-Eye may reclaim his body. He'll be left in wrapstuff. Clearbrook will return when Dewshine's cub is grown. Petalwing will stay. Skot and Krim leave with them for the Forbidden Grove. Cutter won't be riding Warfrost for a while. Skywise catches up to them. There were no windows to watch the stars. They have the right to call the land their own and no one can take it from them.
