Rayek feels he failed stopping the High Ones' accident. The Wolfriders don't trust him. His powers are gone. He tests the physical limits of his body but finds himself not good enough. He loves and understands Winnowill and is just as helpless. He tells Ekuar he must do something. Venka and Zhantee come down. They want him to come back with them. It was winter the last time he came. He'll come up and hunt with them. Venka tells him he and Kahvi had a lot in common. Venka doesn't feel the same about him as her mother. They see a buck when they reach the forest. Rayek wants him. He thirsts for worthy opponents, like Kahvi. He shoots an arrow and is startled by the scream. It runs and Rayek falls. They follow its blood trail to the stream. It's polluted by humans. They expect it to carry their filth away. Rayek tracks the buck. He painfully falls into Redlance's thorn wall. He soon finds the tired buck. Rayek doesn't want to hurt it but decides he must finish what he started. He wrestles with it and is thrown off. The Wolfriders watch. He jumps back on and kills it with a knife. He howls. The Wolfriders refuse to share the meat with him. Venka says it will take more time. He shares it with her.
