In the Valley of Endless Sleep, the Preservers nest in the Forbidden Grove. They're busy catching creatures in wrapstuff. A troll named Grutch searches the forest. Greymung wants another rock-shaper. He sees the wrapstuff bundles and starts cutting them open. Petalwing and the Preservers sing while searching for more birds. Winnowill sent them out to capture and preserve food. Petalwing is tired of searching. They learn that a "dig-dig" is cutting animals free. They start wrapping them back up. He asks Petalwing what they're trying to hide. He frees more and they spit at him. They wrap his head, then his legs, knocking him off-balance. He finds he likes them as he rips himself free. He shares some dreamberry wine with them. They like it. They tell him why they must wrap things. Petalwing flies into a branch and Berrybuzz laughs. Petalwing attacks and wraps Berrbuzz. They both apologize. Grutch drinks until it's gone. The Preservers rest for awhile. The troll is gone. There are many wrapstuffs to repair. One day the highthings will come back for them. |
