It's so hard to choose!
I'd probably have to say...#5 up until Shale gets killed. The stuff after that is too sad to want to read. My second favorite would then be #2, because I loved meeting Yun for the first time. And the story was fascinating.

HY #1 With Strongbow of course. :D

This is a tough one! Those Hidden Years hold some of my favorite art and the most beautiful colors. I think my favorite story is Little Patch. It's beautiful and somewhat sad and I liked that we got to know Tyleet better. I really came to appreciate her personality in that issue. But when I first got that graphic novel I couldn't let go of it! And the coolest thing ever is, that I got to meet Wendy at a comic convention and she was so kind as to draw me a Nightfall into my copy! Now, of course, it's priceless to me.
Ill go ahead and post my favs here to since Hidden Years is proably one of my favorite offshoots.
My fav story of all time is the Little Patch story. Not only did it break my heart but it made me smile all at the same time. I especially liked that it went over the whole tribe and covered what everyone in the tribe contributed to the living at that time.
The story of Skywise's birth is my second favorite. Mostly becasue when I was a younger girl I had a huge crush on Skywise, but also in book 2 you get a glimps at what happened to Skywise's mother when he faces off with Adar, but nothing else is ever explained, nor his deep rooted hatred of the humans when other wolfriders *Strongbow being the exception* treated them as a painful annoyance. Having that missing info gap filled was very satisfying.

I think my vote is for Little Patch too, even though there are some bits that I take severe issue with. On the whole it's a deeply interesting story, showing a lot of 'background' information on how the elves think and act. And the artwork of Little Patch as an adult is lovely.
I don't like the story about Skywise's birth (it always felt too cute to me, yes I know it's also sad, but I can't think of a better word to describe my reaction: possibly cos I don't like Skywise!) but I do love the drawing of Rain holding the dead Shale... aaahh. Touching without being mawkish.
I tend to think of the Hidden Years stories as being the ones in the hardcover book, although I also have all the single issue comics too. There's a lot of really good art in them - like the picture of Dewshine and Scouter colliding when Teir pops up!

well actually my favorite is the first and the one with Eyes High. That one was really touching..... :crying:
*kalaiwaa*
you beat me to it!
I was just thinking the same as i scrolled down to the bottom!
For me, the best Hidden Years issue is #9.5, the no-holds-barred Cutter / Rayek grudge match. Fistfights are a comic trope we don't usually see in ElfQuest - and I don't really miss them - but the story permits one here and, true to form for ElfQuest, it ends on a surprising and thought-provoking note.
Also, there is some superb art there. I mean, all of it is high quality, but some bits stand out like litte jewels. Two of my favorites (page # refers to digital edition): Page 11 - Ember waves goodbye to Trinket; Page 15, center frame as Cutter comes into view, Strongbow gives Rayek a look that says, "I pity you." (easy to overlook next to splendid Cutter in the next frame - but worth stopping to notice); Page 21: Ther preservers are excited ("Smickety-Smack! Smickety-Smack!") - Okay that is a script point, not art, but it is still a grace note.
A lot of little details that add up to a monumental event - just what we know we can expect with Wendy doing layout & pensils, and Richard working his editorial magic.
I don't enjoy gratuitous violence, in comics or in other entertainments. How WaRP were able to deliver with such gusto, and so gleefully, without taking this away from the ElfQuest we know and love delights and amazes me. This may be the single best ElfQuest issue ever.

All the ones that Wendy illustrated, for sure, + the Tyleet/Scouter recognition saga...and that's all that I can think of right now ^_^

Mine would have to be skywise being born followed very shortly by tyleet and scouters recognition!

My absolute favourite would have to be the Strongbow story from issue one - it's so powerful, especially because so much of it was done without dialogue. Talk about a story that suits its central character!
There was a later one, though, that I really liked - Mousehunt! Ember's tribe was in a serious situation - no food, facing starvation - but it was still so funny, the way they co-operate to hunt the only meat available to them. Think this was the first time they really banded together under Ember's leadership, and the stuff they come up with is pretty ingenious.
I love Steve Blevins' version of the elves; it's so clearly drawn in his own style but they are all still uniquely "themselves".

My favourite would be #4. Ember hits puberty and no one can tell her what to do.
Hm... Little Patch and Going Back are my favorites. The first for the heart wrenching story of letting go and strangeness, and the latter for the Go-backs and Wing/Behtia.
I know I'm comming with blasphemy, but I liked Starfall, Starise a lot more in the Wolfrider manga prints, where they had seperated the two stories. You had a better feeling of passing time there. And it made the story stronger, in my opinion.

Thanks to Embala for the avatar and the banners. You're the best.
Well, HY is also what introduces us to Teir. Teir is probably one of the strongest elves depicted, anywhere, just behind people like Rayek and even up with the rock shapers. But his mind isn't enough to fight off Winnowill. And his power draws in Winnowill's twisted work.
Ember later admits making him choose between her tribe and his fur family was horrible, but even with that arguable betrayal in the way, Teir's heart remains with her still. Lucky for her. She'd have kicked the bucket without him.
Though I wonder what would've happened if Teir had stuck around to meet Cutter and the rest. Would Cutter have overriden his daughter's 'get out of town' order? Would Teir have gotten on the palace? What WOULD Cutter have done with him? After all, Leetah had already healed his powers. What would the rest of the elves who've never met him have thought? Strongbow? Treestump?
