Bearclaw probably saw it this way ... afterwards. And the tribe as well. Hasn't Clearbrook mentioned something like "Joyleaf was as much our chief as Bearclaw"?
How else would it be possible for her to away with it - and Bearclaw still keeping his chiefs lock and the respect of the tribe?

Many thanks to cometduster and Jeedai for the great Embala pictures!
Many thanks to Moonmoss for the beautiful Merbala in my avatar

Eyes High too!!!
Well, the tie Bearclaw up sequence is page 61-66.
Strongbow's like, "What the HELL Joyleaf?"
Joyleaf is 'Him and me, butt out'
Strongbow:...going now.
Page 64, she talks his ears off.
And then page 65, the whole tribe's wondering what to do about it. Eventually, it boils down to 'those two can sort it out themselves'

Exactly. A challenge would be 'I don't think you're doing a great job running this tribe, and I could do better.' And the other guy going, 'Yeah, try it!' With everyone else acknowledging it as such. Joyleaf & Bearclaw was more of a domestic dispute that nobody else wanted to touch with a ten-foot pole.
