Questions about the living dead Gliders

How much control do you think the 'you are what you do'-Gliders (the Doors, Beace, Egg) have over their expressions?

What do you guys think is in the drink Winnowill gives them?
And could a healer reverse the effect, or might it be out of their field? Considering it seems to have taken male Door 10.000 years to get free from it. (I might be wrong, since New Blood is so freaking horrible I couldn't stand to read it that much)

Well... I have a few thoughts... mostly humorous.

First off, Stormcatcher, they all were stone shapers and seated in special chairs... Who says they didn't just "dispose" of waste their own way...?

The drink was mostly glue made from the hooves of the No-Humps Cutter tried to catch with the manicals Picknose "gave" him. It took a lot of tries, there was a lot of drink... Kept them rooted to their chairs, and what stained their faces cause their expressions to set. Winnie was also not particular about what went into the drink... Some of the same paint chips that fell into Two-Edge's food fell into the "drink".

They stayed so motionless and quiet because they knew the simple truth: For every word uttered Winnie gave a half day's speech. If they said nothing but made a movement, it was still an hour's lecture.... Still and quiet brought Winnie's Words of Twistedness down to a minute or two whenever she noticed them. Freezing solid reduced the likelihood they were noticed.

Now for the semi-serious answers...

I believe that for the most part the state of the entire Glider society was so glum and stagnent for the same reasons they had stopped procreating and everything else. Winnie had eons to work her wiles, lulling them into a stupor. Even the Chosen 8 were only animated by purpose, not really by will, unless it was a will aligned with what Winnie wanted. If the will conflicted it was suppressed. This might sound like an unlikely situation, but I have experienced it. If you are placed in a situation and have all your thoughts and choices led to a particular end, you fall into it.

I think these rock shapers fell into such an inanimate stupor because their "purpose" did not require movement of their bodies. If a person doesn't speak for a while it's hard for them to start again (again, from experience). Even when their situations had changed they took quite some time to find their way back from the severe depressed state they were in.

Hadn't gotten into New Blood much either, but if things go well, I might have to finish it off.
