I found Elf Quest in the mid eighties, I was working for the State in the Calif. Conservation Corp. living in a dorm situation.
On the weekends we would caravan into town about twenty plus miles away, one weekend I was bored wandering around the of Fortuna when i happened upon a small back door comic shop, I wandered in and started looking around, on the shelf of new arrivals was this really big yellow comic book, I told my self that that is a comic book that will take awhile to read so not even looking at the title or even opening it I bought it.
I read that book in less then 3 hours, I devoured it. Over the next week, before I got into town again on payday, I must have read this comic every chance I could frontwards, backwards, I wanted to be Skywise, recognize Dewshine, and play with everyone else, and I wanted a wolf friend so bad I started looking for one whenever our crew went out backwoods to work.
When I finally got back into town and as soon as my check was cashed i made a beeline straight to the comic store and found out that the owner had no idea when the next one was going to come or even if there would be another because to date he had purchased 5, I bought one and he was sitting on the other 4 no one else was wanting to pay that much for a large unknown comic. I bought another one same issue (my first was already wearing after a week) I vowed to keep this one in good condition. and payed the comic store owner the same price to hold a second issue in my name.
I purchased my first seven ElfQuest books from that store, and then my time was up, I came home to Sacramento, when the last issue came out I had to go to three comic stores to get the last one on the rack all the others in town had be reserved for their regular clients.
From then on it was hit or miss Life got in the way I missed out on many series and issues, but every other year or so I would pull out my collection and no one would see me all weekend long.
I'm real happy to have found the site, I am finally catching up on everything ElfQuest, and I'm loving it.

Your story reminds me how I found EQ 1 (the first German edition). Like you I was an adult - but I was too ashamed to buy the comics at the beginning. No need to tell that it w...
