Finished Shards after a 15 year EQ hiatus

Just finished reading Shards and Hidden Years. Very good stories and most of the artwork was wonderful. Wish I hadn't had a hiatus of 15 years of reading fantasy comics and such. The Shards period was very well done, too. The buildings, most of the clothing, mannerisms, field plate and plate mail armor and other items were about 1500 or just prior to the start of the Renaissance. A couple of comments, though: most of what we were shown in Shards was medieval, but there were some anachronisms. Mild, very high carbon steel (rustable and brittle) would have been the best armoring and metal available (except presumably what Two Edge could produce) but all of the metal looks like modern 18/8 chromium nickel 300 series stainless steel, something not available until the late 1800s. Too, many of the clothing styles, such as those shown with Shuna's first rebel council were reminiscent of mid to late 1800s and the fabrics (such as the cotton broadcloth that some looked to be made of) to produce them wouldn't have been available without the mechanization available around 1830 or 1840 or so.

Towards the end of "Shards," Winnowill has Rayek trapped. She's got him physically and psychically. Venka knows this but assures someone (I forget exactly who) that Rayek will still hold Winno-wicked off.

Yet the next time we see them, Rayek's evidently about to tell Winnie what she wants. Fortunately, Venka and Strongbow ride to the rescue just then.

What are we supposed to make of this?

Was Rayek setting up some kind of ruse?

Or was he really giving in?

If he was really giving in, is it a measure of how weak he is? (Somehow I can't see that -- Rayek's as stubborn as the desert sun is hot! I surely don't what him to have been weak but he does have this huge, stupid soft spot for Winnowill.)

Is it a measure of how strong Winnowill is and how experienced at taking apart minds?

Two-Edge said that the torment he's endured since infancy, Rayek can endure a while longer. Unfortunately he said that just before Rayek cracked. Yet hardly more than moments later, Rayek took Winnowill's corrupt spirit within himself where he has kept it safely for at least 400 years.

So what are we supposed to think of that moment?

I have a good understanding of the EQ characters, but who is Yun :?: I looked up Skywise on this site's EQ Whos Who, and it said that Skywise had an offspring. But I don't squat about him (or even their gender!) Can somebody tell me who Yun is :!: :!: :!: :!:

What would Winnowill have done with the Palace?

I mean, if Rayek hadn't stopped Winnowill, and she had been able to enter the Palace as a spirit. Would she have been able to take it over? If so, what would she have done then?

Would the other spirits in the Palace have fought her, or simply accepted that she would be the one calling the shots from now on?

And would death have ended up changing her, as it did other elf spirits when they entered the Palace? Or was she too far gone for that?

In the thick of things...

Ok, I didn't read Shards through and through- I read bits and pieces. And I just discovered on another thread that Scott died in a fire. Not only that, but Cutter apparently had the choice of rescuing him and blowing the whole operation- or leaving him to die and (hopefully) winning the war.

And with that, I suddenly realized why Cutter made Skywise go with Ember. He was too much of a liability. Would Cutter have been able to leave Skywise to die in a fiery inferno? I think not. Is that right or wrong? I dunno.

But it does seem that having Skywise there would have jeopardized Cutter's ability to make such ruthless decisions. Hence, he had to stay out of it.

Anyone else agree with me? Comments?

Wrapstuff

I have a question. When Ekuar is making the undergroun tunnel, he collapses. After Mender has healed him, he says he need rest.

Why do they put him in wrapstuff? I thought that wrapstuff sort of froze time. If you go in wounded, your wounds will not get worse, but they will not get better either. In KoBW Cutter and his tribe didn't age a second after they was sealed in, did they? So if you go exhausted into wrapstuff, won't you stay that way?

(Hope you understand what I mean? )

King of the Broken Wheel or Shards?

(I don't know where I should post this, so if one of you Preservers know where this would fit better, be free to move this thread!)

I'm archiving all of my Elfquestbooks in Excel, I list them by American title and Dutch title. Now I've stumbled across a problem, the Dutch version never 'divided the series'. Where Siege at Blue Mountain starts a whole new series, here in Holland the issues just counted on from the end of the Original Quest, so Siege at Blue Mountain part 1 is number 21, SaBM 2 is number 22 etc etc.
Now here's the problem: I've just finished the King of the Broken Wheel-series (so in the USA the last KoBW is part 9, in Holland that's issue 37)
Shards starts at issue 41, but where do issues 38, 39 and 40 belong to then? :? I don't know where to list them under.

It's a bit hard for me to explain this accurately in English, but I hope I got my message through! Maybe Dutch readers can help me with this?

Firstborn of the High Ones

earlier, Lord Voll is called 'the firstborn of the High Ones' (by Winnowill, I admit, but he doesn't deny it)... yet, in Rogue's Challenge I think, where there is a story about the High One who shapes himself armour out of bones, the High One called Gibra names her baby Vol, and is congratulated on having made a child to accompany the one Timmain had given to them before. This child is not named. It is not Timmorn.

So, who is the firstborn of the High Ones?

Questions regarding the end of Shards

In the final issue of Shards (very end of Reunion), the Palace sends out a sending to all elves on the World of Two Moons. Suntop asks about Jethel and Chot. Timmain says the call was sent and if they didn't answer, they must not want to join them. Ok, whatever. At this time, Chot is searching for Jethel and I believe he's with the humans ruled by Anh-Li (sp?). Wouldn't it make more sense for Chot and Jethel to just answer the call and be rid of those humans for good? I guess this would mean the Fire-Eye story could not be told then. But then again, it seems no one likes that story anyway. So, I guess I answered my own question.

Ok, another one. What about the Wavedancers? They could've answered the call. What about Windkin? They even went to the mountains near Sorrow's End to pick up the Sun Villagers. The story says the call was sent out to the SVs and Windkin but he never answers. Why? I just read the two Windkin stories in the EQ Vol. 2 comics ,#4 and #18, and there's no answer. How can any elf refuse the call of the palace? I can just see Windkin flying around the desert, brooding about his lost love Ahdri (who isn't really lost and is now with the Wolfriders) refusing the call of the palace and instead would rather just fly around for no reason. He's a bigger asset to the EQ universe than that. He belongs with the Wolfriders, with Ahdri. I hope the next installment (whenever that is) answers this.
