Which characters to cut?

Q. From Thornbrake - You've got the following three characters and can only include two in this film: Dart, the Bone Woman, Guttlekraw. Which one do you leave out and why?

A. I've always been a sucker for a good multiple choice question; but sadly, this one's a little too easy. The Bone Woman (and Dart, for the most part) will be left on the sideline this time around. With 664 pages of glorious graphic novel to condense into a 120-page screenplay, there's plenty of blood on the floor for everyone to be duly peeved. In short, there's very little room for anything in the story that doesn't deal with (or tie in directly to) Cutter's quest. So, indeed, some of my favorite characters, moments and sequences won't make it into the first film. But that, my friend, is why they make sequels...

Soundtrack - who gets to choose?

Q. From Thitida-No-Chey - Who gets to decide on the score/soundtrack of the movie and in which part of the movie-making process will this happen? And do any of you have any favorites for doing the soundtrack?

A. The score for any film typically gets handled in the final third of the film-making process. After what's called pre-production (the writing, casting, preparing and money-gathering part) and principle photography (the part where you, you know, shoot the film) comes post-production. That's where the editing takes place, both picture and sound, as well as the scoring. There are plenty of composers out there whom I love (Alexendre Desplat, James Horner, John Willams to name three) but I'm partial to my guy, Theodore Shapiro. Immensely talented. Gifted, really. But there's a LONG way to go before I give Teddy a call and say, "Hey, Teddy — let me ask you something: how to you feel about elves?"

Why become a director?

Q. From Dreamweaver - Did you want to be a director because of Elfquest or because of other creative outlets and if so what were they?

A. Nope. I didn't want to become a director because of Elfquest. I read the books when I was eleven and I don't think I had any idea then that the job even existed. If I had known at the time, maybe. I suppose I came around to wanting to be a director because I liked telling stories (I was always the Game Master whenever my friends and I played role-playing games) and I liked writing (both my parents are pretty big book hounds so I grew up reading and writing a lot). Those two things get you half-way there. If you add into the mix that you don't like other people messing with your ideas, then —presto— you're a director. Or, at least, you want to be.

Conflict in EQ

Q. From krwordgazer - What do you consider to be the most important conflict in EQ? Is it elves vs. humans, elves vs. their environment, elves vs. other elves? Or something else?

A. Great question. I think they're all important — and additive — conflicts in the story. Without each of them, EQ wouldn't have the staying power and resonance its had over the years. Certainly, humans get the ball rolling and the environment, the big wide world out there, is a challenge for our elves but I'd have to cast my lot with other elves being the source of the most important conflict(s) in the over-arching narrative. Be it Rayek's sullen rivalry with Cutter or Winnowill's merciless torture of Strongbow, or, indeed, Cutter's own struggle to get out from under Bearclaw's long shadow, it seems clear to me that our elves' biggest challenge is others of their own ilk — not to mention those Frozen Mountain Trolls don't help matters much either.

Favorite part of the story?

[b:84cd480da6]Q.[/b:84cd480da6] From jadengems - [i:84cd480da6]What is your favorite part of the story and why? And additionally, which character do you most identify with after having read the complete tale?[/i:84cd480da6]

[b:84cd480da6]A.[/b:84cd480da6] My favorite moment in the first four books (which is what we're drawing upon for the first film) would have to be the ending of Book Three. The Frozen Mountain Trolls have ambushed the Wolfriders (and Gliders, of course) in a snowy pass. Outnumbered and surrounded, the Wolfriders fight ferociously. One-Eye falls. Cutter has been run through and lies at death's door, unconscious in the snow. Then, suddenly, out of the white mist, ride the Go-Backs. I remember reading this when I was 11 and being utterly riveted by the action [b:84cd480da6]and[/b:84cd480da6] torn at having to wait months (MONTHS!) until I could get my hands on Book Four to discover Cutter's fate and the identity of these new mysterious elves. Absolutely thrilling and first-class story-telling.

In terms of my favorite character, that's such a tough one. They're all great. Who doesn't love Cutter? His sense of honor, his loyalty, his deep curiosity. Treestump is definitely a favorite of mine as well, as is Nightfall. But, when push comes to shove, there's really only one elf for me: Strongbow. I'm a sucker for an archer. Always have been, always will be. I'll give you three guesses as to who my favorite character in The Lord of the Rings is...

Themes in EQ

[b:a56d191c40]Q.[/b:a56d191c40] From deerswift - [i:a56d191c40]ElfQuest explores many overarching themes in the original quest (persecution and prejudice, brotherhood, homecoming, love and loss, etc.). Do you have a favorite theme that you are really hoping to include or maybe even highlight?[/i:a56d191c40]

[b:a56d191c40]A. [/b:a56d191c40]Great question. And you're right: There are so many themes at work in the EQ canon, which is why (among a multitude of other reasons) so many people have fallen in love with Wendy and Richard's work over the years and decades. I suppose, if pressed, my favorite themes in the narrative are those of courage, love, loss, and the bonds of friendship and family. I hope to highlight those, both in the script and in the resultant film(s). Wish me luck!

[b:4d74ce3981]Q.
Ask Rawson Thurber

Just got word that the first draft of the Elfquest screenplay is perhaps two-thirds, three-quarters of the way finished and we're aiming to have a look at it by the end of the month. And because he's feeling that the beast is finally coming under control (and because he's that kind of sweetheart) director/screenwriter Rawson Thurber has made an offer exclusively to the readers of the Scroll of Colors. Here's how he put it in a recent email to Wendy:

"What do you think about doing some kind of 10-question thing with the EQ community? You & Richard invite the community to submit their questions about the film adaptation and you guys select which ten you'd like me to answer. I type up my response. You guys dole out the answers one a week (or however you see fit)."

We think it's a stellar idea, so here we go!

There are some ground rules, which I as nastybad admin-thing will enforce.

1) This topic will be locked (just as "Ask Elfmom" was). Every so often (Rawson suggests every week; we'll fine-tune that as we go) I will post a question that one of you has asked, along with his response. You're free to discuss answers in other threads over in "Thunder and Skyfire" but we'll keep this topic neat and organized.

2) Only questions submitted via private message will be considered. This is easy to do; just click on the PM button at the bottom of this post (or any of my posts) and off you go.

3) You may ask as often as you want but we will almost certainly only choose one question per person. Rawson may decide he wants to take on more than ten. On the other hand, he may also discover he can only answer a few, depending on his workload. We want to give a chance to as many different voices as possible.

4) You may ask anything you want but we will choose which questions to forward to Rawson. Hint: the more general, the better. "How do you make your choices what to keep and what to cut?" is more interesting than "Are you going to keep the scene in Book 3 where Lord Voll sneezes?"

It may take a few days for questions to come in and for Rawson to craft his replies, so keep checking back! Ayoooah!
