"Iron Man 3", the new Marvel sequel, includes several prototypes and models of Tony Stark's Iron Man suit of armor.

At least some of the suits have masks that flip up into a visor position. One mask has tabs on either side of the jawline.

When this particular mask is flipped up, and the camera angle is a 3/4 view of the face, the armor resembles the wolf-head helmet Two-Edge designed for the Elves.

And we were lead to believe he or Jarvis came up with all that on their own!

Or is Jarvis a closet EQ fan?

At least two recent family movies had scenes that may have been homages to Elfquest, if not coincidences.

Toward the beginning of "Oz the Great and Powerful," the main character lands in Oz, where he has a brief encounter with some kind of water-sprite. The creature is about the shape and color of a Preserver, maybe larger. It flies up and spits a stream of water in his face, then flies away.

No spoilers, but the scene at the end of the animated feature "The Croods" reminds me a lot of the Wolfriders or the Jackwolf-riders.

-that the company used Blue Mountain without permission (there's a whole chain of Blue Mountains nearby. It's pretty generic term, and I don't beleive there is actual connection).

My late mother served whole baked fish on a bed of rice, usually on an attractive ceramic platter. She said it was an insult to cut the head and tail off a fish. I think I would like a lamprey served in this manner, with the head looking up menacingly.

I could also get one of those tiny plastic baby figures, used in the traditional Mardis Gras King Cake, and put it between the lamprey's jaws before serving.

We Trolls are very creative caterers.

We saw "Snow White and the Huntsman," live action but heavy on CGI. One scene involved fairies that I thought looked a lot like Preservers. They had a little bit of head hair, no hats and no wings. My husband disagreed, but they were pretty close to Preservers in my opinion.

Today I was looking for the title of a children's book, which I found on the website of Charlotte Zolotow (charlottezolotow.com) I noticed that the website was maintained by her daughter, Crescent!

Since the author is almost a hundred years old, I wondered if this was her daughter's birth name. Further investigation revealed that Ellen Zolotow adopted the name "Crescent Dragonwagon" ten years before Elfquest was published. (See her blog post at http://crescentdragonwagon.typepad.com/nothing_is_wasted_crescen/is-that-your-real-name-.html) So the name was chosen independent of any knowledge of Elfquest.

This picture was actually on the front page at NRK a few days ago, the web page for the Norwegian National Broadcast, and are visited by some hundred thousand people every day. It was an illustration to an article about how some students decorated their school uniforms with comic book characters, uniforms used to celebrate their end of college.

I walked past him, saw his name tag... and spun around asking if I could take a picture of/with him because 'I knew someone else with his name' :oops:

He didn't realize the camera was bolted down, station policy. Weel at least the police have a great picture of him and his picture is also on the news as well. :D

I tried that stuff once before I quit. I only bought it for the name.
It tastes like chemicals, I only made one cigarette out of it then threw it out.

There was also a Wolfrider ale once. Wychwood breweries made it. I tried that too... only because of the name. It reminded me of why I don't drink beer. I'm told it was a very nice ale, but I can't stand the stuff so I wouldn't know.

We went to Iran a few times before it was off-limits to Americans. There were rugged deserts, and ancient cities with magnificent tiled architecture. I can easily imagine the Sun Village being there.

Most of "Earth" is just a ball shrink-wrapped in a 2D satellite map (much like a globe). But some "important" places have 3D buildings, as seen here. You have to activate that as a "layer". There's also a "street view" where you can sort of walk down (some) streets. It's a little scary, actually... but at least you can't look through the windows yet.

Google Earth is a 3D "planet viewer" program you can download from (wait for it!) Google. Just (ouch) google it!

Download, install, run, and in the "View" menu pick "Switch to sky". I found the moons by accident (you can use at least three mouse buttons and the wheel to roam about); don't find them anymore now. There's a search box but when I search for "moon" I get something entirely different now:

I didn't know there was a sky view, and I'm using a beta (= testing) release (I had to apply some fixes and the fonts are still weird). So I'm not sure if I'm not "getting" it or if the program's just being wonky. The floating city of Paris makes me suspect it's both...

Here in Australia we have small Marsupial animals Called Gliders, they are kind of like possoms except for the webs of skin and the obvious fact that they can fly... We also have a range of mountains in QLD called the 'Blue Mountains'.

No kidding, I read an article on wildlife conservation in the local paper about the 'Gliders of Blue mountain'.

So, we have this paper-shredder/cutter here and one of my co-workers decided it needed a name, because most of the appliances here have some sort of name. (Usually not paper cutters though)

Well, I'm sure you can see where this is going.

She printed up a sign for the students when they use "Cutter", which is of course what they named "him".

After you use "Cutter":

(1) replace his safety mechanism over the handle

(2) Turn Cutter around to that the handle does nor protrude over the edge.

(3) Be very careful when using Cutter!!! He is very sharp and fingers can get cut off!!!

Me: ...That is so wrong and hilarious on so many, many levels.

I don't have a gallbladder anymore so fries and burgers are out for me ( so are pizza, quichies, real ice cream. Oh no, McDonald's and Burger King are obliged to use 100% beef (they also state what kind of beef, but this vegetarian can't remember) in their burgers... After certain lawsuits, etc.

What does not go on display in the meat counter is used for sausages which you can buy in any supermarket. Go to a real butcher or farm for your animals, people.

If you like that kind of involuntary humor, check out Paris Match of a couple months ago. (It's a French people-cum-news- magazine) They totally unwittingly published that : princess Margaret's family jewels [were] now for sale " Les bijoux de famille de la princess Margarette [sont] mis en vente"(yes the French call them that too). The worse (or best) part of it was that this title was in bold characters, in bright color, on the cover, and that a French magazine missed completely their own blunder .

It's the juxtaposition with the word "managing" more than just the word "meat" that drives the association, IMO. Not that we haven't all but beaten the issue to death, but, in addition to being somewhat over-the-top facetious, I wasn't saying I thought that was the major thrust of the ad. Only that The Powers That Be were probably aware of the alternate innuendo and that it not only didn't bother them, but they would consider it gravy, simply because it would spawn this kind of notice.

As usual, any examination of what makes something funny leaches the humor right out of it. Either the incongruity of a family-friendly restaurant skating along the edge of adolescent dirty-mindedness strikes you as funny or it doesn't. I found it funny (the incongruity, not the dirty-mindedness per se), if not exactly hilarious. Certainly it has taken up more time and energy than the original eye-rolling snort it brought me probably warranted. But that's what makes discussion boards interesting.

A Richard Pini character appears in a French book from the San-Antonio series, "En peignant la girafe".

San-Antonio books are noir/spy parodies (with bits of sex), penned by the late Frédéric Dard. They enjoy a huge following in France, despite being decidedly "dime novels", especially because of their humor and the excellent writing skills of the author (who actually wrote a good dose of "serious" books, but is more famous for that series).

The book (first published in 1963) takes place in a circus, where the eponymous hero and his obese sidekick Bérurier go undercover to unmask a criminal. Richard Pini is one of the circus helping hand; his name is actually a pun on Charpini, a blatantly homosexual cabaret artist, famous in France around the 50s and early 60s.

I think it was that fake Kurt Vonnegut address to a graduating class at MIT, a few years back, that included the snippet of advice: "Be good to your knees; you'll miss them when they're gone."

I tore the crap out of my left knee playing basketball in high school; years later that injury came back to haunt me while dancing to "The Rock Lobster" on a DC Comics party boat and I ended up requiring surgery on it. The right knee, apparently, simply decided it didn't like the lack of attention and visited torn-ligament hell on its own. But somehow that's appropriate; I've long been a collector and as everyone knows, complete sets are always preferable. :roll:

I asked someone who would know, and it turns out that Tam's literal meaning is "a simple thing," implying, in a personal context, nnocence and forthright, guileless behavior. This transposed to "simpleton" due to Haggadah traditions, where a Tam character would be portrayed with dunce caps and the like.

The original meaning, however, is apt!

Actually, Sirius (Alpha Canis Majoris) is the main star in the dog constellation; the etymology and meaning of the name is uncertain. Sirius is also called the Dog Star by virtue of the name of the constellation in which it lies. Other name for Sirius is Canicula - which is Latin and means "The Little Dog"

Heh. Understandable, but again, I'd be willing to bet there's no connection. Flooding and flowering is, of course, a well-known desert phenomenon. The "food and flower" theme makes sense at an agricultural fair (Google turned up a ton of such references) and I note that the fair you refer to actually appears to be called the "Larkspur Flower and Food Festival" - the two important words are reversed.

hey, I have my EQ tattoos. for those that havent seen them here they are.

the wolf is a drawing from one of the back pages of one of the original oversized comics(Ill have to go through them to figure out which one)

and this is Timmain from the end of the Original Quest when she first transforms. its very special to me cause it represents "Mother" to me and is for my mother.

I have plans for at least 3 mor EQ tattoos but thats all for now. hope everyone(expcially Richard and Wendy, lol) likes them.

OK, here's one thing I've always wanted to ask Wendy. Maybe you have some knowledge about this Richard. Out here in Marin County, very close to where I understand Wendy grew up, there is a Mountain Tamalpais, more popularly known as Mt. Tam. It looms over just about everything up here, you can't avoid feeling it's shadow.

Is there any connection between Mt. Tam and the soulname of cutter?

Oh, and in Larkspur in Marin County there's a Festival of Food and Flower that has been going on for a very long time that happens the same week as the Festival of Flood and Flower in the EQ holiday calendar.

Could be coincidence, because obviously springtime is when everyone things of flowers and new growth and wants to celebrate it, but Marin county is just a hop-skip-and-jump across the golden gate from San Francisco.

Another genre of EQ images is that of the tattoo. Often I get email requests from people asking if it's OK to use an Elfquest image as a tattoo, and the answer is always "yes" - I'm hardly concerned about copyright issues because I think it highly unlikely someone's going to clone patches of their skin for sale on eBay!

At any rate, here's one I received in email a while ago. Alas, I have misplaced the sender's actual letter; the file is named "Elisa's Tattoo" so if Elisa is out there, please let me know so I can give proper credit.

The only thing I can think of is once at the grocery store. I was standing in line, waiting to check out my purchases. Someone in front of me must have decided he or she didn't want a carton of milk or something, because the checker got on the intercom and said, "Dairy, I have a perishable Go-Back on 11."

Leno does it, the National Lampoon used to to it, even Elfquest used to do it, and so I thought, why not here? The world is full of newspaper articles, ads, signs, movie marquees, etc. that contain delightful typos and other unintended meanings. How's about posting examples here - with a twist: Can you find Elfquest related items of interest? As I said, in the old EQ comics, I'd print photos of "...elf service" gas stations, or the thruway exit sign for "Hunter" and "Tannersville" (who else but Strongbow and Moonshade, eh?).

I'll start with a couple.

Had dinner with an old college friend the other night at our favorite pizza restaurant, and tucked in with the check was a flyer for a catering service. The following jumped out at me:

Does that mean that at 6-foot-2, I can be had for $92.50 (plus tax)? Gee, I would've hoped for at least a c-note!

And then, on the Garden State Parkway, I saw the following and almost drove off the road looking for very large hawks...
