Hi to all newbies!
First of all, welcome to the Official ElfQuest Forums, it's a pleasure to have you here. Everyone who hangs here would like to greet you welcome! We are an energic bunch of people who wants you to feel as comfy as possible on this board. So this is an informative thread to help you get started! :)
To make it easier for you to get an overview of the different sections included in this guide, their headings have been colour-coded, and these sections are and come in the following order:
¤ Forum Netiquette aka posting on the forums etc
¤ Account Options aka selecting an avatar and signature
¤ Contact Information aka contacting mods
¤ Recommended Threads aka existing threads of interest aka where can I... ?
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
¤ FORUM NETIQUETTE aka posting on the forums etc
- Posting Netiquette Before Starting A Thread..
Always Search The Forum First! Search past postings for the topic in question, to prevent creating a new thread when there already exists one. The Search button can be found on the top of each forum page. Type in one or more words that you think could be found in postings about the topic you have in mind or am interested in. Should you get too many hits, try specifying and/or adding relevant words to see if that gives you a better result. It might sometimes also be good to glance through some of the postings you were not interested in to see if there's a word you in fact should not be searching for for some reason.
If you find a similar thread about a topic you originally had planned to start an own thread about, please continue posting in the existing thread.. And please read through all of the existing thread/threads you are thinking of posting in.. someone may have already posted a similar question to your own and got a reply and discussion following that.. but, maybe you now feel like you want to contribute with a new on-topic question in answer to that reply?
And this brings us to the delicate balance of staying on-topic...
Stay On-Topic..
Please make sure that you, to a certain level, are posting about stuff that is concerning the topic of the thread. Off-topic discussions are allowed for a few posts, but rants should be taken elsewhere. Personal off-topic chats between two or more people over several pages are not allowed, "chats" are requested to be taken in the chat room or by PM (personal message). Just use your instincts on this one. Are you posting to raise your post count or because you have something to say?
Motivate Argumentation And Replies..
It is also good to try to explain your opinion in your posts, and not just post answers like "ok", "I agree with that" or "I disagree". People want to know how you reached that conclusion, and this also opens up for a lot more fun discussions and less "What?!" comments..
Please note that if the mods feel that a thread has been duplicated, they will close it with a link to the old thread. This is to keep all opinions and posts in as few threads as possible, so the board keeps "old opinions" as well as new!
....no threads show up after you searched the forum using a couple of search words?
Then, to start a new thread...
- Posting Netiquette When Starting A Thread..
1) Post In The Proper Forum Section Make sure you are posting in the right forumsection. It'll benefit us all and it'll be much easier to find posts of interest (especially when searching the forum)!
2) Pick A Suiting Subject Line This way others reading the subject line alone with have an easier time to get an idea on what you have posted about, and might in turn also be a lot more interested in reading your post. Just think about, you'd have a pretty poor impression of what a post is about if its subject line only reads "what???", right? Also, this sort of labelling helps anyone who is searching the forums as well!
3) Include Spoiler Tag If Potential Spoilers If risk of potential spoilers, make sure to include this in the subject line, with for instance a "<Spoiler for whateveritisyouareaskingabout!> or simply <Spoiler for comicissue&numberusingabbreivationsforthem!>..
For more explanation to this, see this...
More On Spoiler Netiquette..
Spoilers don't have to be warned about if you are in the subforums for that particular series of the ElfQuest publications, like if you are in the Hidden Years subforum, be sure that there will be information/ spoilers about the Hidden Years comics, so you don't have to add a spoiler warning. And naturally this means that in any of these series subforums you best stay away if you do not want to risk reading any spoilers for those/that particular series!
However, in the OTHER subforums (such as All The Many Colors, The Great Egg)
..please follow these guidelines:
1) If you are posting a new thread, be sure that there is no actual spoiler in the thread title, and also add a Spoiler tag in the subject line. Like "<Spoiler for whateveritisyouareaskingabout!>
2) In your posts, please add a SPOILER! text, preferably with the name and the number of the comic that the spoiler is from also behind it, and then some open space, ie mostly empty lines and your "SPOILER FOR EQCOMIC #!". Beware that mods can change thread titles and posts if they find them to be "spoilerish".
- Posting Netiquette After Posting..
Replying To Multiple Posts/ Questions: Should more than 1 person have asked you a question or commented on your previous post(s) in a thread, please reply to all these in one single posting, than to post a separate reply to each of those posts..
Editing Posts: You can edit any post at any time, just press the "edit" button to the top right of the post you want to edit. Remember to always edit a post if you want to, there is no need to double post.
A lot of the members prefer to let the others know when a post has been edited. That's why it sometimes says "EDIT:" before the added part. This is of course not necessary but it can be good to prevent confusion.
Deleting Posts: Press the X beside the "edit" button to edit. Some members have reported that the X sometimes isn't there. Then you just press "edit" and wipe out the post, and then write a comment that you removed the post, like (post removed, I misunderstood) or something.

¤ ACCOUNT OPTIONS aka selecting an avatar and signature & setting timezone
What Is An Avatar And A Signature? An avatar is what many call the userimages on forums with another name. You might already have seen the images that show up next to usernames on this and other forums. A signature is a text or image that you can choose to have attached below your posts.
How To Get An avatar? Check out the AVATAR GALLERIES thread in the All The Many Colors subforum. This is a great thread to get you started. If you want to reserve an avatar from the first page of this thread, just post under the same thread and ask PCoquelin what 'av you want to reserve. If everything's clear he'll reserve it to you. Then, read PCoquelin's guideline in the same thread to find out how to get your avatar up.
Making An Own Avatar: If you want to make your own avatar, it's just as easy. Just make sure it's under 100x100 px and 10 kB (if you're having problems shrinking your avatar, just ask or PM someone that already have helped to do this in the AVATAR GALLERIES thread and someone will gladly do it for you) and then you can easily upload the avatar from your computer. (Which means no web space of your own is needed.)
Making An Own Signature: You can put pictures in your signature if you want to, but please keep the signature at a certain minimum. Large or very wide pictures can disturb the reading or deform the pages for people who are using a lower screen resolution. No banners / signature pictures should be wider than 600 pixels or/ and taller than 150 pixels. To put a picture in your sig you need to upload it to the internet and then add a link to it from your signature. Go to your Profile page and look for the option attach a signature. You can use so called BBCode to edit any text you are including in your signature. If you want to attach an image, you must use BBCode to attach that image, and perhaps also add a link to that image if you'd like that.
How To Test Avatars And/Or Signatures? There is a handy forum to test this sort of thing in! But keep in mind it is for testing only. Check out the "Testing 1, 2, 3..." subforum for that!
Setting The Time Right: Is the time wrong when you view the forum? Go to your Profile page and scroll to the bottom of that page. There you can choose the timezone that is correct for you. (If you don't know what GMT you are in, check in the nearest city to you and see if you get any closer.)

When you feel you got the hang of the forum, feel very free to post an introduction post about yourself in the introduction thread: "Let's all get to know eachother, eh?". And then, if you want to say a more personalised hello than that, make a new thread in the subforum Enter the Scroll Room. I can almost guarantee a hello within the next hour!
- Where Can I Sell And Trade ElfQuest Comics & Merchandise?
This forum now has a new subforum created for selling and trading of ElfQuest comics & merchandise. Check out The Trading Post !
