(It was suggested to change the title of the thread to include board games, as the potential fan-generated game may be a hybrid card/board game.)
Anyone out there ever play or are playing CCGs (Customizable Card Games)?
Besides discussing games, favorites and whatnot on CCGs in general, would like to ask what people would want to see in an Elf Quest based card game. Started a group to try and put one together.

As far as my CCG experience, I mostly played Star Trek, Star Wars, and Star Quest, with a little Magic mixed in. Ive also played a card game called Lunch Money that was pretty fun.

I've never heard of CCGs, but I would be inerested in such a project.

Time for the Trolls to take over!
Glad to have you aboard, as I see you have joined. You have a great k.owledge of EQ and a good.grasp.of hoe EQ "feels"
For those new to the Customizable Card Game concept, it is a.card game usually played with two or more players. Instead of a set common deck of cards, though (like poker or go fish), each player has a deck of cards that they have assembled from a.larger set of cards. The player preselects the cards with a stratigy in mind to help them win. The game winner is.decided, not just by luck or stratigy, but by a combination of both.
For example, in the Star Trek game, there are two players, and each has a deck made up of missions with point values, delimmas to make the opponent stumble when trying to complete thier missions, and an assortment of crew and other cards for the player to try and complete their own missions.
Magic (and its been a while) is more fantasy based, with factions called colors that require resource.cards.to play. The colors have spells and creatures that are used to attack opponents, or.defend.yourself. Each player has life points that opponents attempt to reduce.to zero by attacking.

I have never played any of these types of card games. So I have no idea what to do. And what is it I can do to be a helper with this to grow?

Hmmm...this is just off the top of my head, just having read this 5 minutes ago and not being familiar with CCG at alL...
There are four players and the game is kind of like Gin Rummy in the goal is to get several complete suites:
-Tribe members - Each player would try to get 4-5 cards all of the same tribe. Maybe once a player got all their tribe cards they would show their cards and that tribe would then be closed. Anyone else who had been trying for that tribe suite would have to start all over.
-Locations - Each player would have to collect a suite of Holt, Sorrow's End, Blue Mountain, Frozen Mountains (Or wherever the Go-backs were) and the Palace.
Then there could be action cards:
-Humans - would make you lose a tribe member.
-Glider - would allow you to take a member from another player's tribe.
-Trolls - would make you lose a location

Saying there are obstacles will get you nowhere; do what you can at the time.
First off, I figure I should post a link to the group main page:
Elf-Quest-Customizable-Card-Game-Project
Just to keep it from spoiling things for the causal passer-by, you will have to join membership to view or participate in the group Scroll of Colors (forum)
Even if you've not played, you might have good information, either in pointing out confusing points of whatever is put together, pointing out things missed in the world of two moons, or just describing what aspects of games you have played that you enjoy! There is so much work to do on the project that there is something for everyone, I think.
Sounds like a start of an idea! We can start a thread in the group discussing it. I like the part that this is a light, easy to pick up version, and as it seems that there aren't all that many card gamers on Elf Quest, perhaps it would be better to have it as easy to understand as possible.
Another thought I had reading this is that if there are a couple "rule sets", and with a little tweaking, this game version may be compatible with others, allowing for two or more ways to play the same cards (in case someone wants to change things up) there aren't many CCGs that allow for this. It also sets up a possible Solitare version of the game. Hmmm...
How do people feel about games in general based on Elf Quest? I hear there was a RPG based on EQ years ago (cant find it to try to play it!), and some people have made up their own games. What things were left out, or were overplayed, or that you really liked or disliked about these or similar games?

I nabbed a copy years ago from a friend. I certainly wouldnt run it as written. Gotta agree with another post.
Quote:
It was produced by Chaosium, I believe, and it came out at a time when game publishers believed that more rules made a better game. They tried to include game mechanics for every conceivable situation and wound up making many games cumbersome and clunky and, in one case, almost unplayable.
If I were to ever run and EQ RPG, (not likely among my crowd of Rgaming L friends) I'd do like the person I quoted and adapt another system.
I attempted to play Dungeons and Dragons, the antique version, thirty years ago. There was a Dungeon Master, another experienced player, and three of us newbies. The action went so fast, I was completely lost and felt stupid. Turned me off to RPGs forever.
Attempted to get involved in some online EQ Holts, but was met with impatience in a couple of them. Others stalled, or simply disappeared. That's the extent of my experience with roll playing.

Time for the Trolls to take over!
I have met with simiar experience. I played some old (OLD, almost text based) computer based RPGs, single player, so I had fin with those, and read some dice books before, but when it comes to playing with others I cant seem to get the hang of it, and whats worse, I dont even kniw what I dont understand. Persoannly Id like a game (in Elf Quest) to be easy and fun for all, no matter what experience people have.
That would be my goal as well. I would like to see players having the option of being humans, trolls, preservers, High Ones, elves, wolf-elves or troll-elves.

Time for the Trolls to take over!
It would be a bit hard to find enough pics for Troll elves, I'm afraid ...

Many thanks to cometduster and Jeedai for the great Embala pictures!
Many thanks to Moonmoss for the beautiful Merbala in my avatar

If Trollbabe and I are thinking the same thing, we mean a player could play a tribe that has both Trolls and Elves, or Elves and Humans, or Humans and Trolls (or any other combination desired) mixed. In other words, kind of like in Shards, when Cutter led a team of Elves, Trolls, Preservers, and a Human to rescue the Shards from a group containing Two-Edge, a city of Humans, and an Elf (Winnie).
Taking it the other way, however, with hybrids of all races, would also be an added facet of game play. It may not be any more difficult, I'm afraid, to "find" images of such characters, as we are still not sure if we can use origonal art yet. If we cant, or can't without modification (which you accell at!
Have you asked Richard about the use of original art?

Many thanks to cometduster and Jeedai for the great Embala pictures!

Sent him a PM a few weeks ago, and got no reply. Was considering either emailing the site or sending invites to Elfmom or RP to the group for their thoughts. I don't have a facebook account to even consider that route. I'm sure the answer will either be:
a) No. Fan art or dolls are ok, but no orgional art if the files leave the site.
or
b) Lets see how it looks in beta. Each card image must have the "image property of..." information as required for any EQ origional image.
I'm hoping for at least the latter, though it will be hard to place copyright info on each card and still have room for the card information with the card resolution possibly as low as 214x308 pixels (minimum recommended size). Larger images are able to be used and would look better, but download time and game lag would increase as well.
Worst case scenario is either that we have to have fan artists draw every card image (like I said in the group, I've come up with at least 200 characters so far, and there's at least another 50 or more generics to create. Each image would have to either be made from a doll or hand drawn.) If we can use origional art, it will just speed things up a bit.
Even if we can make templates for each card type (I'm figuring a day's effort each, with a week of critquing), I'm guessing each card will take at least 10 minutes to insert whatever image is used and type in the text, if it can't be generated from a spreadsheet. That's another 30 hours just for the characters, not including any other cards.
Of course, not all this would have to be done at once. The beta version and the first base set will be much smaller, perhaps with just the wolfriders, some trolls, some humans, and maybe sun villagers. We'll see.
How long does it take to do an Elf doll, say of Cutter, from start to finish?
