The Joostein Gardner book has been translated into English as 'Sofie's World'. The translation, at least the American one, removed all elements of Norwegian culture from the story, making it look as if it was situated in America and written by an American. Gardner did not approve, neither do I as a student of translation.
Wordgazer, have you read any mysteries by Laurie R. King? She's my favourite. She's written some new Sherlock Holmes stories, kind of like fanfiction but because the character is so old there is no copyright law preventing getting published, and the stories are worth it. She's also written modern mysteries, my favourite is 'The Birth of New Moon', for some reason some editions are titled 'The Darkest Place' but the story is the same. I love her characters.
