Translation game

Arthis

The purpose of this game is, giving an elf name in an other language than English, to find who the character is (is that clear?)

The name could be translated in English when not the direct translation (it's the best part of the game IMO)

For example I asked who Volonté de Fer (Iron Will) is?
Answer is Winnowill.

Lostshard (where r u?) asked for a Russian name, maybe Direwolf will contribute...

I asked for an Italian one, YellowHair (where r u 2?) gave us demonio imbroglione to think about...

So my gess is someone with a twisted mind like Two Edge or Two Spears.

If YellowHair is here, or if someone knows...

lostshard

Hello everyone,

First i like 2 say thanx 2 arthis for reviving this game :D

and did ya all see the new pages of "searcher" oww can hardly wait to see it complete, and 4 or 5 stories in the workss mmm

oke on to bussiness

1 translation:

Dutch: Terug-gangers

I'll give a name of an elf tribe (to make it easier) 'cause i can't think of an individual elf name right now, sorry Unhappy

Lumikuu

Hmm... That's a tough one. My guess would be either Wolfriders or Go-Backs. That 'gangers' has a feeling of moving or travelling.

Here's a Finnish bone to break: Terä (Blade). This ought to be easy :)

lostshard

Yes it's 1 of these 2 but which one??? Grin

And is it possible that yours is cutter?

Ps don't have another one yet so who's next??

Fable

Go-Backs... I think.

Hmm.. Bit of polish.

Wada-Muzyka

Arthis

Hi lostshard, nice to see you again :D

I think Terug is "back" so I say Go-Back.

Who is Zenith in French ? (Or did I already ask for this one in the old forum?)

Daystar

well, I can do one in hebrew but I'll have to write it with english letters cuz you wont be able to understand the letters: shkia

lostshard

and again correct it's the go-backs

Kotori

Shkia

means sunset, right? ....is it Nightfall?

Wada-Muzyka

Well "wada" means faulty or something similar...so I'm assuming you meant "Woda-Muzyka"? In which case it would be water-music, or Rainsong, I'm assuming :D

fun game :D

Got one in Dutch : heldere beek

Kotori

Heldere beek

Well, I think helder means "clear", and beek has something to do with water (we have a similar word in Norwegian: bekk), so my guess is Clearbrook.

Arthis

Who is Eau-de-Roche? (of course, French an Canadian people are forbidden to play)

Direwolf

Mmmm... Clearbrook?
Ahh, what do I know. I never knew a word French, besides menage a trois, and even that I spell wrong. :)
Umm... since not ever computer supports cyrillic fonts, I'll give ya transliterations - let's see who's the luckiest with it!

Sledopyt?
Rubaka?
Tchistaya Voda?
Rosinka?

Hehe... try this? ;)

Arfurido

Wow... my translator actually ONLY take cyrillic letters, so I can't do much about it... hehe. Do you know of any translators on the net that translate russian with english letters?

So far my only guess is that Rubaka is Ember... :?

Direwolf

OK Let's see if it works this way:
Следопыт
Рубака
Чистая Вода
Росинка

And this onw always puzzled me:
Ночная Птица

Well, that wasn't Ember. :)

Arfurido

Okay, my first attempt to translate with Babelfish was rather unsuccessfull, giving me names like uMEDPRShchF and oPYuOBS of rFYGB, but then I found an excellent program that made me come up with these suggestions:

Следопыт -- The Pathfinder -- Umm - Cutter?
Рубака -- This one didn't translate, it just came up with "Rubaka".
Чистая Вода -- Pure Water -- Must be Clearbrook, right?
Росинка -- Dewdrop -- Dewshine! Has to be!
Ночная Птица -- Night Bird -- Winnowill? Or Leetah? Or Moonshade? Or maybe Rayek?!

Hahaha - just did a try with бака and it came up with "the tank"... Grin

Direwolf

Dewshine and Clearbrook are right... the rest are not. Should I translate it for you? Just for a laugh? LOL Or would you try again?
Oh, and yeah, might be tank, in the Genitive case form... has nothing to do with the name, though, because it's derived from the verb рубить. LOL

Arfurido

Rubaka is Cutter! Isn't it? Because I got 'to chop' from the verb!

Hmm - but are Pathfinder and Night Bird correct translations? Are they wrong? Or have I just guessed the wrong characters?

Well, 2/5 anyway Wink

Direwolf

Yes baby!! That IS Cutter! :)
And well, the translation was kind of OK... you guessed wrong, but in the 'Pathfinder' case, it's your translator's fault. It has another translation, which is perfectly correct, from what I see...
In the 'Night Bird' case, it's the Russian translator's fault. I was just wondering if you could guess who they named in such a free-will way. LOL

Arfurido

Night bird - Nightfall....?
Is it a wolfrider? Male or female? And which part of the name is strange - night or bird?
I've tried three translators now and they all come up with Path finder :(
So if you could help me with the real translation it would be great... or give me hints of if the name could be split in any way to give me the right results...?

Well, 3/5 now :D

Brownberry

Ok. Most of the Danish ones have been mentioned, but here is two more

4/5, because you guessed right about Nightfall. The second part of the name translation just puzzled me... was it so hard to translate, for the Russian guys? For me it wasn't... LOL

I can't really give you any hints, so I'll just say that it was Scouter. LOL След means "a track" or "trace"... So it's rather "trace finder" than "Path Finder"... weird. :)

The last issue translated into Norwegian was #28, so we never got to see Tyleet. But I don't think they would have changed her name. After all, they kept names like Winnowill, while in Denmark and Sweden this name was 'translated'. They even turned Aroree into Aurora in Danish Surprised

By the way, did you notice they forgot to translate Rain's name in #4? Wink

I did! That one always puzzled me! Young as I was, I all of a sudden thought Rain was just as norwegian as Regn. (Trine Rain, you know?)

Zebula77

Wow, I'd forgotten the translatoin for the names. I haven't read those Norwegian albums since, I think, '99 or something. I remember Lille Vismann, but what was Cutter's translation again? :?

Arfurido

Skarpegg.

I think it's a thing from the (norwegian?) novel Bjørneklo. Bjørneklo has a son named Skarpodd! We read it in school when I was younger and I remember thinking "ahaaa!"

Zebula77

Oh, yeah. I remember now. It'd be cool to read those old albums again. At least they looked fantastic, with all those colours - so beautiful.

marina

Hey all, hearing you talk about the danish/norwegian translations makes me really curious. I've got dutch EQ, some of the names have been changed. But I guess most of them are okay.
And I just got a french EQ, they really did something creative with the names!
Skywise= le Mage, which means The Wise one I think
and Nightfall = Perle de Nuit 'pearl of the night'
Treestump = vieux Chene 'old oak'

In dutch Clearbrook = Klatering which is the tinkling sound of a brook
And Suntop = Geelhaar 'Yellow Hair'
Moonshade= Maneschijn 'Moonlight'

I would really like to have at least one EQ in every language it's ever been published. But Dutch and German are first on my list now 'cause the Dreamtime stories have been coloured for these translations :)

Arfurido

Quote:

Reminds me, definitely, of norwegian "MÃ¥neskinn", pronounced "Monesjinn" (something lik that!) Exept that it means "Monnshine" more than "Moonshade"... nice :)
